I've tapped our two maple trees and two in my son's yard next door. After three days, I have three and a half pints of perfect maple syrup. It's a lot of work, but soooo worth it. It brings back memories of the sugar bush down the road when I was a child. My job was to run ahead of the sledge with the sap tank and scoop the dead mice out of the buckets. Sometimes they hadn't drown and I would go home with a pocket full of wet live mice. I'm surprised mother ever let me out of the house.
I hope we have a long sap run, but with the weather as warm as it is, it may be over quickly. Last year, I got a total of 16 pints. Boy, it's a toss up, early spring or maple syrup....Well, I can always buy syrup. I can't buy spring.
Maple syrup time.
You must have had a very patient mom - hah!!! Growing up (and still living) in the 'burbs, the only time I have tapped maple trees was with the Scouts. For anyone in the Huron-Clinton Metropark areas, most of the Metroparks are having maple sugaring events now and it is a nice opportunity to tap trees and learn the maple syrup process. It is also a great time to walk around outside and to (as Dad used to say), blow the winter stink off!
What a visual! Sticky mice in your pocket. LOL
This weather is kind of scary. We are getting used to it. Is winter done????
