I saw a group of Cloudless Sulfur Butterflies

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

I just saw a group of these maybe 4-5 of them. Do these usually come out earlier than the Monarchs and Gulf Frits? I Googled and found alot of information, but it did not give me any information (or I couldn't find it) on which butterflies arrive first.

Thanks, Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,
I was in the Covington area today and also saw a Cloudless Sulfur. My husband's family has a cottage on several acres, and we went to check on the hummingbird feeder. I saw the Sulfur as we went down the driveway. I know little about butterfly migration, but it appears the Sulfurs have beat the Monarchs. The hummer feeder was also empty.

Normally we sometimes see the sulphurs periodically during the winter. This winter has been hard on butterflies, however. I'm seeing more Red Admirals this month than sulphurs.

Cloudless Sulphur eventually find their way to the higher elevations of Colorado - a long way from their host plant. I guess they are optimists.

I bought a cassia plant this past weekend. I also planted some seeds.

There is one Cassia/Senna that is borderline hardy here - it is a little desert perennial plant. It is on my wish list.
