My dear hubby came home with a packet of red sweet corn seed. Has anyone ever grown this? I've never seen it before, red popcorn or Indian corn yes, sweet corn no.
Thanks
Has anyone grown Red Sweet Corn?
I don't grow veggies, but someone will soon see this and respond. Welcome to our forum. I hope you stay around and enjoy joining in.

Thank you. I've made some good friends over on the poultry forum. I don't have poultry (ducks) yet, I still hope to get them this year. I have had a veggie garden before but it's been a few years.
Anyone? The one my husband got is called Ruby Queen; anyone even heard of it?
Well I don't know where they all are. Try the veggie garden thread here on PNW. Ask your question there. No one has posted there since Mar 6 but they should be watching it.

Thanks, I'll try there.
Loreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!
Howdy - busy here, trying to take advantage of the dry weather these late winter days. It's an anomaly here to have so much dry weather at this time of the year. And it might be accurate to say MOST of the year...
Anyhow - i have grown corn for many years. Never grown the red, though - just the ornamental Indian Corn, or strawberry corn (wee cobbettes).
If you asked me, i would grow it, but then i prefer experimenting. if you have limited space - hmmm, that presents an issue. Please tell info off the packet - whose seed - height - plant to harvest time - all that good stuff. Sounds like someone hybridized a sweet yellow or white with another. Sounds pretty! Sorry about the delay in answering - we're all scrambling to get things done. So nice to be able to work outside again!
Let us know!!!
Katye,
Sorry I didn't take the unusually nice weather into consideration. We haven't even tilled the area where our garden is going to be so all of you are further ahead.
Anyway, info from the front of packet: Sweet Corn Ruby Queen Hybrid from Burpee - Sugar enhanced - first ever sweet red corn - 18 rows of kernels.
Back of packet: Delicious kernels are blush-red turning to deep burgandy red at they mature. Retains color when cooked. Harvest in about 75 days. The of the info is basic planting info, it doesn't say anything else about the corn itself. I just noticed burpee.com on the side....I will check their website to see if it says anything else.
I do have an area in the side yard I can plant it; my husband also wants regular sweet corn and I told him I don't want to plant them near each other due to cross-pollination (had to explain it since he's never had a veggie garden before). I will post here to let everyone now how it does
Hi Loreen, good to meet you! I just saw your post. I've never seen or grown red sweet corn, but it sounds like a very interesting variety. It should be fun to try. I usually sprout my corn seeds before planting to give them a bit of a head start, but I don't plant until the weather has really warmed up, usually sometime in June for my location. I have to protect them from the crows (with lightweight insect barrier cloth) until the plants are big enough not to be yanked out of the ground easily. Darn birds like to go along the row pulling up my seedlings and eating the seed at the base of the new little plant.
Just went to get the Burpee catalog out for a look-see.
And Oh! That's very pretty! Wonder what it tastes like...
According to the information in the catalog: Ruby queen is considered a SE (sugar enhanced) hybrid, and no isolation necessary.
However, any corn that is classified a Sh2 (supersweet hybrid) should be either isolated by 100' or, difference of 10 - 14 ripening days to prevent cross-pollination.
Has your weather been worse than Seattle? Wow - that's not usually how it plays out.
I was outside most of the day trying to place the rocks I hauled this morning. Rain chased me inside a couple times, but it was good weather for sweaty-Donkey work today.
What else are you going to plant in the way of veggies?
I just saw Holly's post: YES - COVER THEM! The Crows are notorious for stealing seedlings.

Wouldn't the cross pollination be significant only if your were going to save seed? And since it is a SE Hybrid, saving seed isn't really an option so keeping it isolated shouldn't matter.
Loreen, I would certainly give it a try. sounds interesting.
yes - only if you plan to save seed.
I'm going to have to order it - it's not on the Burpee racks at the local box stores.
Hey Laurie - how's your weather been the past couple weeks? Are you warming up yet?
And do tell your latest project - always fun to sit with a cuppa & read about your doings.
What she said - that was going to be my question. Wish I had room for corn this year. Maybe next . . .
Lorraine, one thing about being on DG: we will pester you for pictures!!
Laurie, I'm with Katye. Tell us about your pictures. Are you working on the memorial garden for your little buddy?
I've got to crack Picasa - where is Tills, she used to talk me through these things, she was wizard with that software.
I do need to post some new photos - the greenhouse extension was completed last month, and I now have this big (about 2x bigger than I planned!) bricked patio around the greenhouse (was supposed to be a place for plant ghetto, now definately PATIO) . Sheesh.
need visual aids.
Laurie - does Mary have your email address? I'd be happy to contact her on Facebook for you and tell her that you're in need of her Picasa services . . .
Thanks Katie - I do have it, I've just been so swamped I just feel as though I need to get some more memory space (me, not computer) before I ask her. But will you tell her hello, and that she is missed. How do all of you find time to do more than one 'chat room'? I've got to get more organized.
I have been spending too much time at the computer.
However, that is all about to change - I'm getting 25 yards of "Chicken 'n Chips" this weekend to incorporate into all my beds this summer and lighten up my clay. And it's light out for at least an hour after I get home, so I can start working in the yard in the evenings. Yippee!

I'll pop on to Facebook and tell Mary hello for you. She's active on there, caught up in the games. I'm not sure why she's given up on DG . . .
Thats marvellous!! Another thing to make you smile when you are out gardening: CHICKEN AND CHIPS!
sorry, I was smiling so much I forgot to say thanks for passing on the hello.

It'll be a little British element in the garden. LOL :-)
OH OF COURSE!! THE AMERICAN WOULD BE CHICKEN AND FRIES!!!!! I hadn't even gotten that bit it was so familiar it went right over my head!
Well, it is food for the soil, so chicken n chips (or fries) would make perfect sense!
25 yards of it! WOW, Kathy! You must be undertaking a major soil amendment project this Spring.
I've been waiting for the longest time to do a major bed overhaul, so I'll be spreading this on everything everywhere and I'm guessing it'll take most of the summer because I need to take time to mow, etc. I did break down and only order 20 yards. It'll be here tomorrow. I think I'm going to get a new wheelbarrow, too. Heh heh.
I saw a wheelbarrow on Craig's List for $30, possibly somewhere near to you. I can't remember for sure. I rarely can take advantage of deals there, being the ferry ride (and lots of waiting in ferry lines) away, but fro some odd reason I am periodically drawn to surf through the deals to be had on the mainland.
Whoops, sorry. I went to look again. It isn't anywhere near you.
