CLOSED: Trumpeter Swan's?

Sandusky, OH

Looking for a confirmation. I can see the Tundra Swan's, and think the bigger one's are Trumpeter's, which would be a new bird.

Certainly looks likely, though tricky with the pic quality - can't compare bill shapes, or presence/absence of any yellow on the bill, easily.

Looks like you have both in the pic. When you see one species alone at a distance, it's tricky to identify. But, there are really no other possibilities I can think of here other than Tundra and Trumpeter. I was fortunate so see some together this year. I have some pics on Picasa at

Ok well I'll leave this thread go for now....heading back to the location today...with the longer lens...or i'll try to get a little closer.

Nothing but Mute Swan's today...thanks for the link Reddirt I remember when you posted them not too long ago...I was hoping to see Trumpeter's...the size difference is there in the picture...plus the bigger bird's are behind the Tundra's...I,m marking this closed...will be heading back there this weekend...pending the weather.

Why don't you go to to the Trumpeter Swan Society and file a report of your sighting. eBird, too. It's important to track these birds. The group of 8 is still wintering here on a nearby lake. I suspect they will be leaving soon, though.

I will do that, I have other shots I have to go through first to get a count. I did not see any of the Tundra's or Trumpeter's today and did a complete trek around the area, hope the Mute's didn't run them off. The Mute's were building nests today.

None of the other pictures provide any clue as to which is which. Going by the photo I would say 3 or 4 Trumpeter's, it would have to be a low number. I,m hoping they stick around for a couple of week's and I can see them again. I only had the point and shoot with me that day.

Look at the size difference is this pic. Height is most evident and the trumpeters have longer necks.
