Hey, does anyone know about this breed? I understand they are really sweet. The pictures of them are adorable! I am always after another egg color. They are supposed to lay a "pink" tint egg. I have seen some pictures, but I am not sure they are really pink.
While I am at it, are there Americaunas that lay more of a blue egg? Because mine lay a teal egg. I have heard tell of one that lays a pink egg. Is that a fluke or are there birds that lay a pink egg, and how can I get one? ;)
Salmon Favorolles
I don't think there is a "pink" egg pigment. The so-called pink eggs are really a pale shade of brown.
Yes, Salmon Faverolles are an excellent breed with a reputation for being extremely docile, gentle and affectionate. They are excellent layers of what are called "tint" eggs which can range anywhere from cream through brown with some intermediate pinkish-brown shades. Like Porkpal mentioned, there is no pink egg pigment, but some shades of light brown can appear to be pink depending on the light in which they are viewed. Faverolles are listed as "critical" on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy priority list, so they could really use more people who raise them.
Some true standard-bred Ameraucanas obtained from reputable breeders have been selected for a reliably blue egg color, although hatchery Easter Eggers can really lay any color egg. Just look for true Ameraucana breeders and ask them about their egg color.
I just won 6 Salmon Faverolles eggs on e bay.The eggs i recived are cream to a pinkish brown color.as soon as i can get some batterys for my camera i will take some pics of the eggs for ya.I used to have some americanas when i was in florida that layed the pinkish brown egg.I got beautiful blue eggs from very light blue to really robin blue eggs and the variouse greens also. The amercanas i have now are only laying a green egg.I did win some eggs for True rumpless Araucana they are supposed to be the bluest eggs i will know when i get them.I should get them this week also so will take pictures of those also.
We raised some Salmon Faverolles a couple of years ago, but they didn't have a chance with our aggressive Silverlaced Wyandotte hens. They are too docile and submissive and they just didn't thrive. Only one rooster and one hen lived to adulthood, and they were recently killed when a mink got into my henhouse. They were really sweet birds; I'd like to try some more sometime.
I ended up with a roo and two pullets. They held their own with the other breeds....but they had a lot of room to get away.
A lady I know was going to order some chicks from MM and I asked if she would get me two of the salmon faverolles and she said she would can`t wait to see them.I read up on them they are good egg layers and they are so cute
That does worry me. Will the others kill them? Or do they just not thrive?
The chicks are a little delicate. But the grown birds are just a bit mild and timid. If they can get away from more aggressive birds, they should be fine.
I had the same problem with some Buff Orpingtons. They were so meek that they let the Barred Rocks bully them. There was plenty of room to flee but they just cowered and squawked when attacked. No one got seriously injured, but I treated some bloody heads.
It does seem like BR do a lot of bullying. I mean, they are very nice to people...but they just seem very dominant with other birds.
With us it was the Silverlaced Wyandottes, with a little help from our White Rocks. The Salmon Faverolles just couldn't get enough to eat, nor could the Cuckoo Marans that we got at the same time. It caused us to revamp totally our chick-raising setup; now we keep them in separate quarters until they're old enough to defend themselves better.
