I went to a good produce dept today and got this giant sugar cane, do I cut it between the joints and cover with soil? Is there anything I can make with some of it? And I also got a taro root, this is a type of elephant ear, right? They also had lotus tubers but they didn't have a growing tip so I thought maybe they wouldn't grow, anyone know? they had Buddah's Hands too, never seen those before! I left tem there, they were $8 a pound!

I have an 8ft. sugar cane, now what?
What grocery store did you go to, and in what section did you find taro root? I've not seen those items at my area grocery stores. I've heard others mention finding taro root at the store, but I never noticed what section. Thx!
I'm pretty sure it's a local chain...Market District (Giant Eagle). They're a huge grocery store with specialty sections all around the store, a fantastic produce dept. and they even have a small (10x10) hydroponic set up growing bibb lettuce and nastursums. Everyone I passed in the store asked me what I was going to do with the sugar cane.

The sugar cane you can cut up with a couple of nodes on each piece and put them in the ground. They like rich soil and plenty of water. Some people crush them and drink the juice, basically sugar water.
I've found the taros they sell in grocery stores don't seem to grow. Might be something done to make them store better for eating. If you do get some that do grow, they like wet soil, or will even grow in shallow water.
Not sure what you call "Buddha's Hands".
Here's a link to Buddha's Hand

Thanks for the other info!

Wow Roxxanne!
I'll have to check out the Giant Eagles around here a little more closely. :)

Take a look at the site, maybe there's one closer to you, Joe. marketdistrict.com It's a really cool store, pricey but cool!

OK, Market District, I've never seen one of those. :)
That's neat. :)

After I posted it I looked around and seen that they are only in the Pittsburgh area. Keep your eyes open I'll bet they will be making more.
