Again at Brazos Bend

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Every time I go to this park, I see something that I've never seen before. This time it was the Barred Owl. Another visitor to the park told me that he'd been coming for 25 years and this time, he saw wildflowers that he'd never seen before. It's just an amazing place.

Crow and Ibis. Can't understand how both seem to be in focus. Weird eh?

This is a terrible picture, but I thought it was cool b/c the Red-bellied woodpecker looks so small next to the Black Vulture.

This is the same pic of the Barred Owl. It's the only one that I got! Can't leave it out b/c it is my favorite of the day.

Crow. I like this b/c the branches frame its eye and there's something in its beak.

Stopped by the side of the road before I even got to the park to take this hawk photo. He was on a bare pole right by the road. Flew into this branchy tree when I stopped. After I took the pic, he flew into a dense, leafy tree. Didn't care for the publicity I guess.

I resisted posting pics of alligators, the armadillo and trees, but have to post this non-bird pic. I was driving at 55 mph, opened the window, held the camera out and took this. Amazed me. You can even see the road behind me in the rearview mirror.

You're right, it does look like an amazing place to visit. The photos are wonderful. Those Ibis are really something to see. So many great birds!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks y'all. It is the kind of place where you can't help but get some good photos!

Hi Elphaba, I think that is a Red-headed Woodpecker across from the Vulture.

The thread is great! I'll come back to comment more.

An excellent thread Elphaba! Brazos Bend definitely lives up to it's reputation!! There is so many I love here I don't know where to start, obviously the Barred Owl was a great find. I love all the Herons and Egrets and it's nice to see the Common Moorhen and Tricolored Heron. Love the White-faced and White Ibis too.

Thanks so much for posting this wonderful thread!

Thanks Pelle. I'm always excited about my photos when I get home from Brazos Bend. The Tri-colored Heron and the White-faced Ibis pics were the best I've even gotten of those two birds. I've never gotten so close to them before.

So you think that's a red-headed woodpecker? Could be. Seems to have a white chin though, but hard to tell for sure. It's a bad pic and they were really far away, so could be. It's too bad that I couldn't get a good shot of that b/c it was just neat seeing them together.

The head and face look fully red and the wings black with the white underside. It is cool when you see such different sizes of birds close to one another.

I really enjoyed looking through this thread!

Wonderful thread Elphaba...I am very envious of all the shore birds that you saw and very jealous of the Owl! I think everything I have seen of Brazos Bend has it at the top of my must see list. What an amazing variety of birds and wildlife...thanks for posting!
