Dell 19" monitor

Have a Dell 19' monitor that is about 6 years old. When plugged into the PC it will show for less than second when I boot. Have tested it and it is definitely the monitor, not the PC. I'm not good at disposing of something if there is a simple way to fix it. Replaced it for only $128 so don't want to invest a lot of money. Just one of those won't give up until I've at least made an attempt to repair.

Any suggestions?
