CLOSED: Palm Warbler?

Irvine, KY(Zone 6a)

This little bird was near (but not participating in the finch frenzy at) my seed feeders this morning. Sorry the pictures aren't great, but are the best I could get. It is about 5" long, with gray to brown back and head, buff breast, and a distinct yellow collar extending to the sides of its neck. White wingbars are prominent, as was V-shaped tail. I saw no eye stripe or rings that could suggest it is a vireo.

It seems a bit early for spring warblers in central Kentucky, but that is my best guess. Help with identification would be appreciated.

Here's another not-great picture. I forgot to mention the beak is dark in color.

American Goldfinch, winter plumage. Note the thick, conical beak - warblers have slender bills.

Bird at top right in the second photo is a White-throated Sparrow.

Thanks for your input, Resin, but I have to disagree. We have lots of American goldfinches here, and this was not one of them, though they are starting to change seasonal plumage. The dark color on the back is not as olive as the Am. Goldfinches.

I did not notice the white-throat until after I had posted the picture.

Not a Palm Warbler...here is my Palm Warbler shot, plus a link to the Birdfiles showing Palm Warblers.

I agree it is not a palm warbler, what about a pine warbler?

Not a Pine Warbler either. As you can see, warblers have a slender beak, not conical like your bird. I really agree with Resin that it is a Goldfinch. The color can vary greatly from bird to bird.

It's a goldfinch, although it looks like it might not be in the best of health. I think I see the conjuncivitis eye disease that started w/ house finches and has spread to goldfinches as welll.

I've seen a few house finches with this, and they are usually away from the flock and much more "ratty" looking

Thanks for your input, everyone. It sure didn't look like any of the other AGs which are starting to show changes from winter to summer plumage, so maybe if it is ill that would explain its not behaving like the others that frequent my feeders. I will leave the thread open a little longer in case anyone has any other ideas.
