A different dove

Norman, OK

I've had a pair of Eurasian Collared Doves hanging around for a few days. Today an unusual third dove joined them. Appears somewhat leucistic with a lot of white on it. Really a different looking dove.

One of the other Eurasians for comparison.

Oh, isn't it just beautiful!! How lucky for you to be able to photograph this beautiful bird. Hope you'll send a photo to your local Audubon Society.

Could be a leucistic Collared Dove, could be a Barbary Dove (an African species popular as a cagebird, sometimes escapes), tough to tell which. Is it the same size as the Collared Doves, or slightly smaller?

Whatever it is, it sure is a looker.

Resin, It's slightly smaller than the other two Collared Doves. It was back yesterday afternoon and this a.m. Another view.

Wow Red...what a gorgeous bird!

Probably an escaped Barbary Dove, then

Bird is still returning daily to feed. It's moved out back now where I broadcast grain for doves and other ground feeding birds. A shot of it with another Collared Dove.

Glad it's still there for you, and us, to enjoy!

Shortly after I snapped that last pic. I observed those 2 doves mating. The leucistic is a female. Maybe I'll have some more light-colored doves around in a few weeks.

What about a ringed turtle dove? IN my Sibley's they say that they are smaller and whiteer; are a domestic bird.

I've considered that possibility. Collared Dove is more probable as there are quite a few of them around. I'd love to make it a Ring-necked, would be a new bird for me.

There's an error in Sibley there; if you look at the page, he gives the scientific name as Streptopelia risoria, which is Barbary Dove, not Ringed Turtle Dove.

Barbary Doves can (and often do!) hybridise with Collared Doves if they get the chance, so seeing it mating with a Collared Dove doesn't mean it isn't a Barbary Dove.

Well, there you have it.

Of course domesticated birds can't be ticked anyway, so it doesn't matter too much if it is or isn't ;-)

Resin, you are the "tick" police.

Good catch on the error in Sibleys. The more I look at this bird side by side with a Collared Dove, the more I think it's a leucistic Collard Dove. At any rate, it now has a mate and has discovered the grain out back. It was first feeding under a feeder in the front yard with a pair of Eurasians. Maybe the male dumped his mate for this trophy chick. :-)

Another shot in the sunlight.
