Japanese Plumtrees in zone 5 ?

Piedmont, SD

I am new to growing fruit trees and would like to avoid mistakes. I already have a Stanely and an alderman plum, which both are looking good.I am thinking about planting two Japanese plums, but I heard they are harder to grow.I live in a sheltered canyon in the Black Hills of SD, which is zone 5. I'm wondering if anyone has had good luck with Japanese varieties or maybe some pluots? If so, which varieties?
