Hope it is readable.
BasilSome might find this chart useful
I just bought some Lemon Dani Basil seed. It's recomended for containers. I see it's the tallest basil.
cando1--I really think Pistou and Minnette are great! in containers-they look like little well trimmed shrubs and stay that way with no fuss on your part. I have not grown the Marsseille. You'll love both of these, especially the Pistou and they both have great flavor.
The lemon has a fantastic smell but it is a bit unruly--kinda like Bigfoot, you and mjsponies :)
ah hummmmmm, howwwwww did I end up over here ???????
I wish I could find purple ruffle again. mine froze...I guess it was purple ruffle, green/purple kinda changed around. Seminole springs doesn't have it, but the have the African blue which I love too...
That is a handy chart Victor. Now, do one for dill, would ya?
I will try the Pistou and Minnette
The lemon basil will fit right in with my unrully containers.LOL
I've seen purple ruffles advertised somwhere. I'll see if i can find it again.
LOL How about a chart on mints?
My ignorance is showing, Herbal Betty. The only dill i know is the one you stuff into a pint of pickles. And the seed just says dill seed.
Vickie
Cando, that would be great. If I could find both at the same place it would be rather helpful....I just hate running all over for "this n that"..
I made one for rosemary--will work on dill and mint--does anyone want the rosemary one?
If you do have purple ruffle seed, I might forgive you (a little bit) for hogging the chocolate basil...;-)
Rosemary can be trained to trail ??????? Can I grow it in a hanging basket ?
Vickie, dill comes in lots of varieties. And it is herb of the year for 2010. There is Bouquet Dill and Delikat and Dukat and Fernleaf and Hercules and Tetra and Mammoth. This year some new ones to me that I will be growing include Green Sleeves and Monia. And I have Indian Dill. I'm sure there are more!
Victor, you are good at making those charts. How about thyme? She asks with hesitation, knowing the enormity of that project. You should submit these charts for a great article on Dave's Garden!
herbalbetty, which dill do you think would be best for florida. I tried the Mammoth but it didn't germinate well and those that did did not grow well. I've had the Fernleaf...I really grow it for the Butterflies mostly, but I do keep one for "human consumption"....
mjs-I had one of those senior moments---I did save seeds of Purple Rufflel but forgot it is a hybrid and the seeds would probably produce only a green Basil. Sorry
Only the Madaline Hill Rosemary will trail and it's too big for a hanging basket.
herbalbetty-it is pretty complicated but I will try to expand on the Dill--and I think I have a Thyme one somewhere.
If everyone will send me their list of Dill I will try to include that variety.
that's ok...I had one too...forgot I'm not 30 anymore and jumped over the side rail of my truck after unloading some hay...sitting here with ice on the Knee....NOT a good thing with an week long mounted archery competition coming up. I'll look online for a plant...
I'm sorry about your leg. Hope it gets better quick.I broke my wrist falling over my own feet in December.
I have'nt found any purple basil plants. But Pinetree Seeds has the seeds.
www.superseeds.com
I've ordered seeds from them and never had any problems.
Vickie
Cando, I guess there's two kinds of purple basil. the one I'm after is purple ruffles, which I don't think comes from seed. My original plant I got as a plant, I should have taken cuttings....maybe our farmers market will have it that's where I got it from to start...I think...
mjsponies, you might give Hercules dill a try. But, Florida growing is pretty different than here in NY state! BTW, I am VERY impressed in regards to your mounted archery competition! Let us know how that goes.
ok, I'll look up the Hercules. Yes, Growning herbs in Florida is different. One reason I mostly grow them in containers, so I can move them around to avoid the very hot summer sun.
Mounted archery is a BLAST !!!! I've ridden since I was 4yrs old, and only been seriously doing archery for the last few years. A great way to combine two sports !
mjs,
Hope the knee gets better soon.
Purple Ruffles seed>>>>http://www.burpee.com/product/code/61341A.do?ch=SEM
thank you ....but I thought it would only produce green basil?
No--the seed as purchased will grow purple-I grew it.
Ok..I went and looked at the seed, now I don't know if I really had purple ruffles, ( I did lose the tag to the plant and I'm not real good at recording everything I have) anyway, my ruffled was mostly purple, but had a lot of green, almost like being purple/green variegated. Is there such a thing as variegated Basil...wait, it's the middle of the night, I guess I'll go google it. Course God knows where that will lead me................

Don't take this as "gospel" as it is dug up from a brain that is atrophied from eating too much chocolate Basil---:)--but I think I remember reading that the Purple Ruffle is reverting back somewhat to it's green cousin and does more so as the growing season progresses.
Just Googled this:
"The plant results from a cross that Torrey made in 1980 of 'Green Ruffles' and 'Dark Opal'.
We grew 'Purple Ruffles' from four sources and discovered considerable variation in the plants produced. One seed sample was highly contaminated with green and green-purple variegated seedlings. Whereas most of our flats produced 130 usable seedlings, this seed produced only 16 true-to-name seedlings. Such incidents cause fears that the 'Purple Ruffles' seedline is drifting into extinction, but even as we write, a number of breeders are conducting rescue efforts. "
So I'll bet yours was one of these.
I might have been wrong about not saving seeds--If I saved the seeds it would have been from a solid purple--I'll check my stash-If I still have them I will send some. Not sure what survived my trek back home to Texas.
Yeah, I really am not that crazy about the solid Purple Ruffles ( as far as color goes) I've seen in the pics. I'd like the green/purple variegated one. If you have it that would be great ! If not I'll order some and hope they "don't" come true to the Purple Ruffle !
Thank you for the chart, I often throw small-leaved or dark leaved basil in mixed pots or flower beds, so planning for the correct size is helpful.
Every time I plant Purple Ruffles, I get about 1/3 to 1/2 purple/green variegated. It is not Burpee seed, I purchased it locally.
Most useful charts VORTREKER ~ thank you. I do agree that they would be an excellent addition to the DG database in some manner and are particularly useful at planting time.
On the rosemary ~ there is a trailing http://www.highcountrygardens.com/catalog/product/82674/ that does in this zone. It is a free blooming rosemary and can be trained as a topiary or trailing. Same wonderful smell and taste.
mjsponies ~ you might try planting fennel for the butterflies. The cats will strip it and it comes back time and again. It is a perennial in this zone. I find dill melts with the intense heat we see. Am growing Bouquet this year from a really vintage package of seed. Mine manages blooms but rarely produces seed before the heat. Am trying a more protected spot this year but probably will be too shady.
On the basils ~ the three all time favorite flavors for me are cinnamon, lemon and a long lost purple leafed licorice or anise. Not the purple ruffles. I do like anything licorice... fennel. basil, true licorice. Tis another weakness.
I just checked and Pinetree Seeds still has Purple Ruffles Basil, as well as Lemon, Lime, Cinnamon, and many other lovely basils. I thought that I got the seeds from them this year, without checking the invoice or journal.

If anyone is interested in some other basil varieties...there is a trick to navigating Pinetree Seeds....go to the vegetable seeds, then click on the last chance varieties...there will be six more basil varieties...if anyone is interested...that is.
