Planning a trip to SC in April and want to visit nurseries, Jackson &Perkins, Parks, etc....any ideas of places to see or has anyone gone to these places?? Any help will be appreciated!!!
SC nurseries
SC in general or or a more specific area? April is prime for plants blooming some of large gardens are pretty intense.
If you look at DG's Products and Sources you can find all the nurseries in the area you are visiting in SC. This is the link below. We think SC is a beautiful state. What area will you be visiting ?

Thanks, will be in the Greenwood are in SC..
Greenwood is a beautiful town. My husband and I lived there from '63-'65. I am not sure if Park Seed is opened as a nursery now. Seems I read where they were only mail order. Maby someone can fill us in on this.
How do you like SC?? Am thinking of living there, this MA, is all 'taxes' and living expenses are 'high'!!
I've never lived anywhere else so I have nothing to compare it to. In our area which is 10 miles from the beaches, the living expense is low to average. The closer you are to the beaches or the more metropolitan areas (Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville) you will probably find housing and taxes a little higher.
IM HERE> LOL Parks was open a few months back for their tour but Im not sure. A fun place to go might be checking in with the farmers market in that area. i havent been to that one but am sure it would be neat that time of year.
Wow!! You are both great helping me!! Will definitely go to a farmers market...
Conway sounds great, close to beach also.....what do houses go for there???
Am going to try to look around when I go there...
parks is usually open during the summer months to people. also they have a parks outlet in greenwood also that is open and sells lots of stuff too besides plants.
Im in the middle to lower part of the state. Houses can be very reasonable depending on your wants. If your simple down here you can find one for 35,000 or if ou like fancy and on a beach the sky is the limit. I like Living inland. More growing choices and I dont have to run from storms. LOL
This is our Chamber website.

Make sure you go to Parks outlet, Wayside Gardens, they always seem to offer different specials....more yard and garden art at Wayside early on in the spring than plants but they do keep an 2 indoor areas for rose bushes and such...I've gotten great deals on bulbs in bulk at Wayside too....Parks has more plants and find their yard art, gardening supplies to be more expensive than at Wayside (don't ask the girls at Parks don't understand it either) but this is the time of year you can find some really good deals at Parks on certain perennials in 4" containers...hope this helps ! (I live about 45 minutes from Park Seed)
Deanna
Hey Deanna.
It is so good to see you posting.
How have you been?
Greenwood is a lovely town; it still has a small town feel but it has all the amenities and it is close to Augusta and Greenville if you need more.
Nearby Newberry has Carter and Holmes Orchids and that place will blow you away; they have other plants too. Also nearby is Roses Unlimited in Laurens. I believe they are only open by appt. however.
There is a wonderful garden festival in Augusta in April. http://www.sacredheartgardenfestival.com/
If you are driving down I-95, you will pass within 3 minutes of the Pee Dee Farmers Market. That one is SC's largest flower mart in the spring and worth seeing. It is on Hwy 52 in Florence.
Hope you enjoy your visit. It's funny, people in SC, even the newcomers, complain about taxes all the time. They seem to have forgotten what they were like in places lilke MA.
SC taxes are nothing compared to MA. Hate to say this in case a political type is listening but property taxes are very low in SC compared to the Northeast. Home prices???? Who knows right now, it's a buyers market for sure especially if you want to fool around with short sales and foreclosures. Like anywhere it depends on location. I live by the ocean and within a mile of me there are houses for 120K and some topping 5 million. If you don't need to live very near town or water you can buy a pretty big house and acreage for what I would say is a reasonable amount of money.
Never say a tax is cheap or someone will want to raise it just because..... Hilton Head actually put an extra percent tax on something because "we better raise the tax before the state makes it illegal to do so." That was their actual rational, LOL>
These are the dates for the Southern Plant and Flower Festival at the Pee Dee Farmers market.
Southern Plant & Flower Festival
Pee Dee State Farmers Market
2513 W. Lucas, Florence, SC Map It!
April 8 - 11, 2010
Thursday - Saturday 8am-6pm
Sunday 12-5pm
The Pee Dee Farmers Market is in my neck of the woods. LOL
If you go to the show, try to go on Friday (not crowded and the best selections)...Saturday is usually reall crowded, Sunday afternoon is good too.
Core! Think your post might have been somewhat misleading! What does "near water" mean? Municipal drinking water? or Ocean Front Property? Big difference...
"near water": close to ocean side, creek side, or river. Right, Core ? That's what it means around here.
LOL Stono very true. I mean the ocean, rivers or marsh that leads to a river and ocean. If you can park a boat in your back yard at low tide you're going to need a couple of bucks. If you can park a 100 foot boat in your back yard at low tide you will need a few more than a couple. LOL>
Being near a sewage treatment plant will let you pick up propriety on the cheap.
ladyslipper8744, you are going to be very disappointed in Parks this time of year, in my opinion. Their display gardens are out of this world during the later part of June and after that each year, but before the flower festival, I have often thought how disappointed I would be had I made a special trip before that date.
Look up JERRY'S FLORAL SHOP & GREENHOUSES in Greenwood for gorgeous display of sales plants! (No, I am in no way connected, except as a happy customer). I like going in and just looking around each spring!! they have beautiful plants.
Like everybody agrees South Carolina has much to offer; we welcome you with smiling faces wherever you visit!!
Thanks all, will try to get as many I can cram in the few days I will be there!!
Hi Ladyslipper! I hope you have a great visit to SC! If you make it up to the Greenville area, and are a fan of Daylilies, Daylily Gardens is here. She has a fantastic selection of daylilies and is open only April-June. It will be a beautiful time to visit, my yard is just starting to take off now.
Thanks Kl, am thinking of taking 81 south to Anderson SC, it looks like a nice place....has lots of water and many hotels to stay at, will either stay with friends or go to hotel for a few nights....would like to check out the area for homes...
You got it, Core! Some of the things I've seen billed as "Waterfront Property" around here never cease to amaze me. Tidal creeks with 1" of water at HIGH TIDE are listed as "waterfront". If there's a retaining pond for runoff from a development/shopping center, the surrounding property is billed as "waterfront property". Makes me wonder what this world is coming to. Makes ol' P T Barnum's observation that "There's a sucker born every minute" ratchet up the scale of philosophy to reach the Socrates, Plato level...
The low country real estate terms, lol. Marsh view=swamp. Protected wetlands=deep swamp. Lagoon (which I use all the time)=pond. Palmetto bug=giant flying cock roach. Ocean view is another good one. My friend calls the little marsh mice palmetto squirrels, not sure if anyone else uses that term.
Spent my whole adult life in "Marketing", Core. Ain't it a wunnerfull thing....?
Oconee County is in the most western-northern part of South Carolina. We are almost surrounded by water. We set at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. There is no part of the world any prettier than this. We do get some stormy weather at times and even a tornado or two but very rare. Some snow. We are tucked away in such a little cubbie hole that we escape the harsh weather that the Greenville area gets.
When the housing market plunged our market saw little if no change at all even though our unemployment rates are still high. I still believe that is due to the textile industry collapsing around us. You can still buy nice houses in the two-three thousand dollar range with land. Some with creeks and pasture. We are not far from the rest of the world either. Please check us out.
Nine miles below us is Clemson University. Used to be Clemson Agricultural College. On this campus or close to it is SC Botanical Gardens.
