There has been a lot of talk about tulips on various threads, which I've only vaguely kept track of. I plant daffs rather than tulips, even though they may well be an inappropriate shade of yellow (kidding). I just like the daff trumpets better than the tulip lollipops. I'm helping my son wih his yard up in Bellingham, and he has random tulips planted willy-nilly here and there. They are coming up nicely but don't yet have any flower heads. Do you think I can gently relocate them now to a more suitable spot (like perhaps all together in a drift)? Or should I wait until they bloom (assuming they do) and move them when they start to die down? There is one spot in particular that I would like to move several to make room for a corner shrub, which I'd like to get in the ground sooner as opposed to later. Thanks.
Moving tulips
I would go ahead & move them, trying to disturb the roots as little as possible. Dig deeply and out away from them to capture any bulblets. I have moved things at the weirdest times, and had success.
I always weigh the situation, and then assess the risk. At my place, the shrubs win.
I too just moved some and they have grown and seem to be doing fine. They didn't even droop.
I go up to his place every Tuesday, and plan to bring a shrub this week and do some moving around. Trying to give him fairly low maintenance but lively beds, working with what he already has, and mostly poaching from my gardens. Rather a challenge, but fun.
