We'll be planting our pole beans on a teepee contraption this year. How many little bean plants do I plant at the base of each "leg" of the teepee?
Pole Bean Question
I plant started plants in four inch pots, I plant e atound each leg of the tee pee. This works very well for me.
So do you plant just one plant at the bottom of each leg?
Steph - I did the (sort of) teepee thing in my square foot garden last year. Planted 2 beans on each leg. I also had a stake up the center because we get some high winds and my soil is not heavy enough in the raised beds to hold them well. Picture blowing teepees - lol. I also planted 2 at the base of the center pole. So that is 8/sq ft and they did well. Only problem my poles were only maybe 6' because of my shade structure, so I had beans growing to the top them back down again.
Steph sorry I didn't proof read lol at what I wrote.
I plant 3 four inch pots around each leg. Each pot has 5 plants growing up. So I guess you could say 15 seeds would work.Maybe even more would fit if you draw a circle around each leg and stay six inches from the leg then put a seed every 2 inches? Ernie
I plant 3 or 4 seeds around each pole. Whatever seed takes, is what I end up with, usually 2-3 per pole. I don't start them in pots ahead of time. I always have lots of beans.
Thanks! Last year we did a long line of beans and planted beans on either side of the line. I think my teepee has 5 legs, so we'll probably have beans coming out our ears! LOL
I no longer use the teepee
I now cut sapplings and set them them in a straight line and tiev them in with wire
I have just planted garden peas on one side and plan on planting pole beans on the other when it warms up
When the garden peas are finished I plan on planting Florida speckled butterbeans and red ripper southern peas
I usually plant 200 feet this way and another 100 feet on chicken wire.
Here is a image of poles I have just set in new ground.
This has worked well for me for many years.

This thread is right on time. I'm planning on planting kentucky Wonder pole beans in a container with a trellis or bean teepee of some sort.
??? Can I also plant cowpeas in containers? Pink Eye Purples, Cream Peas, Red Zippers, Purple Hulls. LMK soonest. Thanks!
Linda
Due to space issues this year (we're expanding and adding more veggies), we're going to use the teepees. Last year's attempt was a wash out with the pole beans, so we're trying a different variety this year and a different structure.
Linda, I don't see why you can't plant your cowpeas in containers. Some don't even need support!
I plant my pole beans in a box with eight long poles tied to a center pole (a "bean box" from Gardner's Supply) . I plant two or three beans around each pole and then some just down the middle (I hate unused space). They grow up the poles beautifully and up the middle. When they reach the top they start going sideways, but the beans usually fall down and are easy to spot. I love Smeraldo beans - great flavor and great beans. I have put tomato cages (the big tall square ones) in a pot or two and use them for the beans to crawl up. Mine never seem to mind being crowded. This year I am moving them to my bigger boxes and just going to use tall tomato or bean cages for them. I want a lot of beans this year - the freezer is empty. I also do a lot of bush beans - especially the wax (yellow) ones - no one around here sells them at the market so I grow my own. M
My plan was to plant 3 or 4 at the base of each leg, all the way around each leg. We'll also have bush beans.
