Sorry, I'm a total amateur. I know about 10 birds, this isn't one of them! : )

can anybody identify this bird?
American Goldfinch, winter plumage

So thats the suspect eh? I was reading about the description and all after I Googled it.
It must have quite a bit of change in plumage in Winter. I didn't see any white tails in the photos and the bird here didn't have any yellow that I recall. Its Winter plumage must have added a lot because it wasn't really that small of a bird. I thot it was closer to the size of a Starling. The reading I did says its quite a small bird. It was running other birds off, a Downy Woodpecker was one, it was smaller than this bird. I like Finches, hope they are coming around.
Heres one site I read on it. -

Thanks, Will
That second pic looks like a Mockingbird.
A Mockingbird, thats a nice bird too. I was hoping that is the same bird in both photos. I'm a little puzzled by the white tail.
Thanks
Yep, not an American Goldfinch after all! It's a Mockingbird that has lost its tail. Guess it has been mocking you ;-)

Lost its tail hehe! I remember once when I was a kid there was a chicken contest down the street and I spray painted my chicken pink! The judges looked pretty closely at it, but I'm quite sure they knew there isn't any pink chickens..lol
Maybe somebody painted this bird's tail white to throw folks off! : )
I got some more photos of it today, one with that Downy Woodpecker looking on, while perched on a Japanese Maple, I guess waiting for its turn.
That Mockingbird is quite the regular now, I suppose it knows where to get food from now.
I always did like the Mockingbirds.
