Greetings All,
I've been off this discussion list for months now. And my streps are dying. I wish I could describe what is happending to them. The leaves go gray then limp, then after a while, they are lifeless.
Anyway, I've been wondering if this has something to do with the fact that I have been very bad about using water without chlorine?
I keep forgetting to let the water sit out for a day or so. In the future, what do you think would happen if I used that stuff for dechlorinating fish water. Has anyone ever given that a try?
Let Me know:)
Thanks Much,
Marlene
Dechlorinating Water
Marlene,
I have never tried the dechlorinating stuff, but when I used to fall behind in watering, sometimes my water didn't sit.It didn't cause any problems like that.It really sounds more like a fungus or something. Can you post a picture?
Lynn
i don't know what clorine would have to do with watering the plants.???seems like they would be ok.i use ro water, suppose to have nothing left in it. no problem here, it sure would help with a picture.

Please take a look at this website. Especially the section marked Botrytis. It sounds exactly like what you are describing above.

Hope this helps.

Could also be crown rot but I can't find a picture anywhere.
Jan, you could be right.
Here is a great article on crown rot with lots of links to pictures to see if this might be more of what you are describing:

Hope this helps.
I will let others help with the symptoms . . . but to answer your question, yes, the fish store dechlorinating stuff works. As well as the ph adjusters . . . I use both. The de-chlorinator stuff comes in handy too, when you don't have time to let the water sit out.
Thanks Nicole,
That is good info. I try to always let my water sit (I keep 4 gallon jugs filled at all times),but when you really are behind in watering or need to fill wicking containers or dampen mats,it is not always enough.
It really does sound like Botrytis or crown rot.Crown rot would work very quickly. If the roots are really badly damaged a plant could easily die in a day or two.If there are any healthy leaves left,I would cut them off, dust with sulphur and root them ASAP.
As Bonnie said,a picture would really help.Good articles Kim!!
Lynn
Thank You All So Much
For your wonderful replies and ideas. unfortunately, I don't have the right materials on how to post pictures, but from your descriptions, I guess I have to give up the idea that perhaps chlorinated water is the cause of the problem.
Thanks Again!!!
Marlene
Yes, I agree with the others....I have used regular tap water sometimes and it has never hurt the plants at all, ever. You have something else going on there. Sorry! ChuLin
