Calathea crotalifera 'Yellow Rattle'

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I have a possible trade for some Calathea crotalifera seeds. Anyone here ever grown calathea from seed? I'm wondering how long the seeds stay viable. Any info on the genus and or species would be appreciated.

I've grown this for years. Not from seed though. This is a large clumping calathea. It can reach heights of 8-9 ft. The blooms come out of the stalks at about the 3-4 ft level. It won't bloom until it gets large enough. Its not hardy outside zone 9B or so. It will come back from the roots sometimes if it freezes to the ground but not always (like after a winter like we have had this winter). Best to keep it in a pot, but you will have to keep sizing up and up and up.

Thanks for the info - I was delighted to have over 15 of the Hedychium horsfeldii you sent me germinate .. they have pretty much stayed comatose in the greenhouse this winter .. hopefully when it warms up they'll start growing again.

Great! I like it when that happens. My plant tried to go dormant overwinter, but its up and running now. Putting out new growth.
