recently in the Dominic Republic tropical rain forest..i was in heaven! I saw some vines that reminded me of elephant ears (taro) but they were on (vines, probally the size of 2 fingers) width.there were differant varities( colors and shapes) im guessing,,the leaves were not solid...like groved out..can anyone guide me to what these are called.I grow colosso and upright ele. ears,,these vines could really set my yard apart from the norm..I do have heated area to keep them in winter.. any help will be appreciated. thanks dee
looking for a vine
if you have a photo of it, someone would be able to identify it really quick.
It does sound like some type of philodendron. The leaves get enormous down here if they are allowed to climb, they stay small if they are kept cut. The reverse is also true, if you use a section of vine with enormous leaves for a cutting, the new leaves will be small again until it begins to climb.
d_lilly, I've never seen that before, way cool! I'd like some. Dominican Republic is a very beautiful country, hey?
And LiliMerci, yes, that's a phil that's native here in the Caribbean, I have a little. I know someone who has it covering a steep bank behind their house, lovely.
You could grow a monster Elephant Ears with enough water and fertilizer. I had one for a haha houseplant when I lived in Virginia long ago, in a five gallon bucket with no drainage, boy, did it ever take the water and fert, and took up half my living room! I believe there are hardy banannas also. For a warm sunny spot in a very sheltered location.
The vines are all slow growing.
The variegated one above the path in the bottom left of the picture is called teléfono in Spanish and is a Pothos, it is the same plant as are grown in offices around the world but in the tropics when they climb the leaves become huge. The one in the middle bottom with the round, green leaves, looks like a type of philodendron but I don't recognize it.
Yes that is similiar...except the leaves were alittle more round ,and each was groved.. i am lucky, I have a heated glass house I can overwinter things in,,my hang out in the winter.Sooo the question is what is the name of this kind of plant so I can look up and get some these varities?
ps..thank you all for your comments,,,Ill start looking for these..dee:)
just a quick note to let you know I found the plant in one of my books...just didnt know what to look under,,thanks for your help..now the one I want is Philodendron bipinnatifidum and or selloum.....or i want to live in the rain forest! :) thanks for your help all of u...Dee
d_lilly, the plant in the lower right hand corner of this picture really does NOT appear to be a Philodendron. What is your conclusion for this plant?
