OK I need help, what is this?

Arlington, TX

I have no idea what this is or what it is called. It's handles move apart and appears to be a cutting tool. I want to display it in the garden. It is heavy, 15 pounds or so, 2.5' x 1' or so. Any ideas? I thought a man might have some idea as I do not.

what ever it is its cool!!! I see some kind of african horned animal when I look at it. long antlers like a gazella but the face sorta of like a giraffe. it would look great mounted on a piece of black rough sawn wood then hung like a picture inside or outdoors.. You could wire it to the wood, add a wire across the back. then hang it with a heavy duty hanger

Thats what I thought! An african mask of an animal. I can't wait to get outside.

DH's best guess....an antique circle scribe.

Maybe a cable cutter

They are an old pair of keystone dehorners for cattle.

AH! Thank you. They were used to trim cattle horns? How interesting. Wondering how old they are now. I have puzzled over them for months...

Yeah, catzgalore nailed it! I googled and search showed a thumbnail pic of something similar, but McAfee SiteAdvisor was warning me against that site, so I didn't go there. I'm sure they have a better way of dehorning cattle now...at least, I hope so!

Cheryl,
My BFF who is the one who told me what they were says they're probably around 50-75 years old. Her grandfather who raised cattle has a pair of them like that. She says that the newer ones have wooden handles.

Linda,
My BFF has worked around cattle all her life and she says that they still pretty much dehorn cattle just about the same way now as they did then.

C,
My BFF was wondering how you came to have them.

Arlington, TX

Bought them in an antique store in Arlington, paid 80 bucks. I saw them several times and finally just decided to bite the bullet and get them.

Be careful you don't want to cut off any fingers :)
Hope you enjoy them in your garden.
