our elusive Wood Stork

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

this guy/gal recently started visiting our lake. it is very camera shy and i've been reluctant to try for a picture until it feels more comfortable.

the pictures aren't the best but i was able to snap a few just now.

they are on the federal and state endangered lists, so it is a special treat to see one. they are not that common in my area.

Thanks for being so considerate to him. I hope he gets used to you so we can see more shots. Congratulations!

thanks!

there is a small pond near us and whenever i drive by, i always see one or two there. i've been so envious... that pond is surrounded on three sides by mobile homes and the fourth side is a busy highway, so i know that they can tolerate humans if they feel safe. we have much less action on our small lake so yes, i hope he/she becomes a more frequent visitor.

Sorry I missed this posting. It's wonderful that you're getting to enjoy one of these birds. I've never seen one, but I always enjoy seeing photos of them.

just an update on "our" Stork...he visits almost every day now and i have some great video. i love watching him use his feet, much like a chicken, to scratch up the water in his search for food. i hope to post some pictures soon but i still try not to disturb him. he doesn't mind our barking dogs or when we come in and out of the house so i think he's getting more comfortable.

That is great tracks! Be sure to give us a link to the video when you have time.

at the present time, the video is on a mini cassette in the camcorder. i have no earthly idea how to get it online! lol so far i have sandhill cranes and the stork on there. my plan is to fill it up with bird video and then figure it all out!
to complicate things, i hadn't used the camcorder in at least 8 yrs. so my footage is pretty shaky and rough, to say the least. i'm trying though!
when he flew in tonight, oh man, what a sight! of course camera and/or camcorder were in the house. they are really huge birds and i get so engrossed in watching him that i forget all about capturing the moment.

How neat...and I totally get the getting so egrossed in the moment. I would too I bet. Glad it is still around for you to enjoy.

i get so excited that my heart actually starts beating faster when i see this bird. we have osprey nests close by, limpkins with babies, the cranes, herons, egrets, eagles, ibis, cormorants, anhingas, grebes, but this lone bird stirs me as no other, save one, the swallow-tailed kite. maybe i just have a thing for the black and white birds! lol

Oh your so lucky!

Wow, trackinsand. I hear you. My heart will skip several beats if I would be so fortunate as you. Thanks for sharing your pics.

I think we all have "that special " bird or two that just stops us in our tracks.
