need advice on pigs fast

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

I have a pig.. hog.. idk really. I do not know anything about them except they are cute when they are babies. BUT this very large, I'd guess 250 to 300 lb pig has decided to venture into my yard, my property & has yet to bother my chickens but he bothers me. He brings with him a St. Bernard that I have seen take down fawns & a chocolate lab who shows a great interest last summer in chickens. What I'm really asking is how cautious of this pig should i be? Its HUGE. I swear it could run me into the ground if it wanted too. Yet it seems to pay no mind to me when i scream at it from a 100 ft or so away. Just wanders around on its own terms. I have no clue what I'm dealing with I just know its black & big. I have a picture but it will be later this evening before i can post it. Please. does anyone have any advice?

I would call animal control,if he starts rotten in your yard it will be a mess

Pigs can be deadly--it doesn't sound like this one is, but they can be very, very dangerous. I would call animal control and see if you can locate the owner.

I think I'd be dreaming about ham, bacon, spareribs, etc. ;-) "Oh, no, I haven't seen a pig around here... nope, not me!" ;-)

Do you have any idea who it belongs to? Pigs are really good at getting out of enclosures if they aren't secure.

And yes, it could damage you if it wanted to.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

we know who owns it.. they won't keep it in. Animal control won't help bc we aren't in town. This isn't the first time he's gotten out. He's just never ventured as far as my house & i haven't seen him since last summer when he crossed the road in front o me at dusk & I almost made him into bacon along with totaling my car. He wasn't near as big then.

gallesfarm - i was dreaming of pork chops.. smoked..

I'm afraid he will hurt my chickens, cats or come after us.. it is a male. They knew he was out. They weren't concerned about him. Supposedly they have put him back in the enclosure tonight. I hate feeling like I can't go out in my own back yard in the country for fear of an animal. The St. Bernard he had with him... i saw it take out a fawn this winter. Then it was eating it later when i came back by. That scares me to death. I love those dogs, I love most dogs but seeing one take out a deer.. that's just creepy.

idk what to do. Sheriff said they wouldn't do anything about it.

I'd tell your neighbor that the next time their pigs gets in your yard, you'll call them, and if they don't come get it within the hour, you're going to shoot it. I can't believe animal control and the police won't do anything - that's ridiculous!

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

Its ridiculous.. but its a good thing some times too. They don't poke their noses where they don't belong. We live outside of town. Here if you live out of town you can do what you wish as long as you don't abuse your animals. Which is nice.. no one telling me what to do. This is the first major problem we've encountered. Neighbors peacock use to roost on our house every morning to greet the sun's rising. That was obnoxious.. but usually its not a big deal. They just don't have a good pen built & don't care too for this pig. BUT that doesn't help the fact he scares me.

They've been let know that very thing by other neighbors but it has yet to happen. He's not a cute little piggy anymore, he's roamed since he was very tiny.

Lodi, United States

Poor piggy. I wonder if there is some sort of pig rescue or animal rescue you could direct him to...If you found one, you could tell the owners the next time he is on your property you will find a new home for him. Put it in writing for them. If they don't care, he may be safer too.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

o my.. if i did that they'd have a fit. rehoming him would start a war if you asked them about it. They don't care if they care about him or not.. you ask about that or tell them that & they'd come unglued. its better if he just.. disappears by some fate. We do have bears in these woods. I'm actually surprised they haven't had a nice pork dinner.

He won't hurt your chickens... he will destroy your yard what kind of a pig is he?

I grew up on a hog farm... if it was a momma sow with babies, I'd be VERY afraid.... has it been castrated? If it has, I wouldn't worry about it in the least... just walk to wards it, and wave it away. If it hasn't been castrated, I'd be a little more cautious just because it's a strange animal.

250 to 300 is well past prime meat size.

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

hit send too soon.

Most likely, if he looks like he weighs 250-300 pounds, he probably weighs more than that. LOL At least that's been my experience. They weigh more than they look like, they're a solid animal.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

he's about as big around as a 50 gal oil barrel... maybe bigger. The neighbors up the road say that he will charge you if you approach him. We "think" he is a Vietnamese pig.. least that's what we were told when he was cute & tiny. (keep asking neighbors questions on him so I get more answers & info...) He has no concept of where he is.. if he wishes to cross the road he just walks out there which is why i nearly hit him last summer and he is still very much a boy. Never been castrated.

Richmond, TX

If he is the size of a 50 gallon drum, he weighs a lot more than 300 lbs and is unlikely to be a Vietnamese Pot Belly. Be careful he could definitely hurt you even if quite tame. Pigs can be moody.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

we had a problem for a couple summers with people selling these cute little piglets with the label "Vietnamese pot bellied pig". I would guess they fell for it & he was only tiny for so long. They use to let him stay in the house.

o trust me.. i will be staying away from him.

Here is a link to a copy of Missouri livestock law.
http://asci.uvm.edu/equine/law/fence/mo_fnc.htm

It doesn't give a date so I can't if it is the most current.

The first section reads
"It shall be unlawful for the owner of any animal or animals of the species of horse, mule, ass, cattle, swine, sheep or goat, in
this state, to permit the same to run at large outside the enclosure of the owner of such stock, and if any of the species of domestic animals aforesaid be found running at large, outside the enclosure of the owner, it shall be lawful for any person, and it is hereby made the duty of the sheriff or other officer having police powers, on his own view, or when notified by any other person that any of such stock is so running at large, to restrain the same forthwith, and such person or officer shall, within three days, give notice thereof to the owner, if known, in writing, stating therein the amount of compensation for feeding and keeping such animal or animals and damages claimed, and thereupon the owner shall pay the person, or officer, taking up such animal or animals a reasonable compensation for the taking up, keeping and feeding such animal, or animals, and shall also pay all persons damaged by reason of such animals running at large, the actual damages sustained by him or them; provided, that said owner shall not be responsible for any accident on a public road or highway if he establishes the fact that the said animal or animals were outside the enclosure through no fault or negligence of the owner. If the owner of such stock be not known, or if notified and fails to make compensation for the taking up, feeding and keeping of animals taken up under the provisions of this chapter, the same shall be deemed strays, and shall be dealt with in the same manner as required by law with respect to such property as strays, under the stray law. Any failure or refusal on the part of such officer to discharge the duties required of him by this section shall render him liable on his bond to any person damaged by such failure or refusal, which damages may be sued for and recovered in any court of competent jurisdiction."

How much of a war you want to start with you neighbor is for you to decide. How dangerous he is will depend on his temperament and how much time he has spent with people. If it was me I'd walk out to him with a shovel and a 22 and shoo him back home. The shovel to put in the ground between me and him if he wanted to try to push on me and the 22 if he got real aggressive. A shot between the eyes would end his aggressiveness for all time. The biggest kind of damage he will do is digging up plants and stuff. A pig can dig up large areas and they seem to find the most expensive plants first.

The dog hunting down a fawn and eating it is more or less normal dog behavior. I have a placid German Shepard mix but I wouldn't put it past him and the neighbors beagle to chase a fawn and kill it. -Doug
