Wait a minute. Their explanation says these chickens are pure breeds & not hybrids. Then you read about each type & they show crosses. When I went to school, if you cross two different things you had a hybrid.

Our pullets are Gold Star Layer. They also are sexed by color of new hatched babies.

I think they are making a distinction between auto-sexing and sex-linked.

With sex-linked you have to repeat the cross to get the same result. Which is why when you see eggs from Black Star or Cinnamon Queens for sale on eBay--you know they won't produce sex-linked chicks, even though the parents were.

With auto-sexed breeds you make the cross once and can then continue breeding from the cross with the same result.

I'm sure they continue the breeding until they come up with a stable breed for all traits...but that breed is then auto-sexing, while the "ancestral" lines weren't.
