Laugh for today

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Billy and I have been waiting patiently for our catalog from McMurry hatchery...Ok well as patient as a 4 year old can be. I was wondering what was taking it so long, but figured with the holiday, things were slow.
Today we stopped to get our mail and the postmistress handed Billy a plastic bag from the postal dept. He looked at the front and said Nanny we got our chicken book. Well not really. You see somehow our catalog was damaged in shipping, so they sent me the first page ONLY in a plastic bag with the statement that "we are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you"
Ok shortly before this, we had stopped at the feed store where we were informed that they would not be getting the chicks in until the 8th of March, that was the first let down for him. Then he does not get his complete catalog just the first page, Let down two...

GOOD NEWS WILL FOLLOW...
Then we stopped to feed his barnyard, where Cookie Ketchup and Sesame street (Geese) let out their call to him to feed them some fresh grass... So he picked handfuls of the wild grass growing, where Cookie in her piggy state promptly nibbled on him trying to get the grass... He laughed, thankfully, and still gathered more, still talking away to them. Then we talked to the rooster (Not Named Yet, rescued another one we did) and then we went in to Hays harem ( the name stuck for that coop section) ....We got an egg yesterday so we figured there were going to be none today, but Billy checked anyway.... There were two for us today, and he said it was a good thing, He was hungry. He thanked all his girls and Hay for making his eggs, I did not correct him... LOL I was too busy laughing as Miss Z stood in front of him and demanded her feed... He reached down and patted her head and then she ran off to join the others as he put it...The SUPPER BIN...
I was not feeling so blue as we walked out of the barnyard, they say Chicken soup is good for the soul....Maybe but..
Billy and his Barnyard are good for what ever ails you...

I love hearing of your adventures with Billy. It is so heartwarming to hear a child having such a wonderful childhood. You are a great woman MsJ I'm proud to know you.

He does keep me young, and living life thru a child's eyes is fun the second time around. Yesterday we were flying a kite out in the arena, and I really had to laugh and wonder what people thought when they see us from the road... On the way into town, we talk and spell and he points out colors and letters. Today we went to breakfast and he got a menu with crayons. He asked me if I wanted to see his name so I said yes. He surprised me by writing his name Billy Bob.. Ok it was a little crooked and interesting but right there in front of me was Billy Bob. After breakfast, I carefully folded that menu up and slipped it in my back pocket. It will go in his tin where all the important memories reside... We have an old clay squirrel that is nailed up in his barnyard. After we feed, we each take a marble down off the post and make a wish. His start out I wish Nanny is happy with.......(what ever he can think of) Mine start out I wish Billy Bob is happy..(most times it is With his life on the ranch).. My marble is placed in the squirrel, his on the post... If someone is helping, he will grab an extra marble and hand it to the person for them to make a wish... Our wish time is special and one I hope he will pass down...

That sounds wonderful.

MissJ, Billy is so lucky to have you, and vice versa. With grandkids we have the time and wisdom that we lacked when our own kids were young so it's great to have that extra chance to be young again with them.

Are you putting the dates on all those keepsakes? Sometimes I forget and then, years later, I kick myself.

You should also save all these stories in a wordprocessing file and back them up. You can just cut the text from these threads and past it in a document with the date. Billy will treasure them later on, and so will you.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

I have kept some of the post for him in a word doc and saved them on a cd... But I worry about the tecnology changing and he wont be able to read them when he gets older, so I am in the process of converting to notepad as that never changes...

what a wonderful childhood you are giving Billy

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

I do hope he learns to spell better then me or atleast when he starts using a computer, he uses his spell check... LOL

You can always print them out, you know, and save them in a folder for him. Paper lasts a long time and isn't made useless by newer technology! He would love to see those along with those photos you've taken!

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

A wonderful gift at some point would be to have them bound into a book for him to keep. you could add photos also of his prized animals now & the ones in his future. Create a story of his life book.

(Zone 5b)

Glad to hear you are keeping the story's for Billy. He'll have the gift of those story's and pictures to cherish for life!

I have to give him credit today, it was blistery cold this afternoon and I gave him the option of staying in the house while I did afternoon chores, and he decieded to come with me. We both were bundled up in our NWD's covering our chins and mouths, gloves, heavy carhart's jackets, and me the big sissy had coveralls on. Anyhoo I was toping the water for the horses and he went in the dog area to unhook the heeler, and between both dogs, he got knocked down in the wading pool that they use for water... Poor kid, but he got up and did what he had to do. His little hands were red, he had pulled off his gloves and I could see them glowing. I hurried up with chores, drug him in the house, made him change into Sweats, and his sleeping shoes(Slippers my sister got him) and made his hold his hands by the heater. For supper I cooked his favorite, Jasmine rice with Almond milk, cut up banana's and honey... That warmed him up real fast. He sure is a trooper...

Poor Billy! But sometimes it's worth getting wet and cold to have Granny fuss over you and make you Jasmine rice with almond milk!

When my son was about two he was out with me one winter's day while I was feeding the sheep. I told him not to chase them and to stay away from the water trough, which was one of those large farm metal farm jobs. I was busy giving out hay when I heard a splash, and there was the kid in the water trough. I picked him up, brought him into the house, and gave him a nice hot bath. He loved hearing me tell the story, so I made a little book for him that I illustrated, called "Jeremy and the Water Trough." It had a large picture on each page and a few lines at the bottom. You can imagine how much he loved it; he had it memorized in no time. I made copies for his kids, too, many years later.
