Two or three years ago the electric utility tree trimmers left a mountain of wood chips on my mother's farm at my request. This stuff now is a rich brown and looks a lot like peat moss. How can I use it? It would be from all sort of deciduous trees maybe some walnut.

beausMom, you might ask this question over on the Soil and Compost Forum. Those folks have a lot of expertise about soil and compost. I do know that there is some danger in using chips from a black walnut tree.

Black Walnut secretes juglone from its roots & leaves as mentioned on that great link on the previous post. It is a natural Herbicide so it may not be the best choice for mulch
