Who is she?

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I was given this standard. The tag called it a potato tree, Solanaceae. I’ve had her for about 3 years. I haven’t been able to find much out about her – searched the web and found things similar but nothing that was a match. She has one inch purple blooms and in the winters about half of her leaves fall off. She spends her summers outside in full sun and the winters in front of a window. I haven’t given her any fertilizer because I don’t know what she likes.

Can any of you tell me what she is and how to care for her.

I'd have to see the flowers closer to be sure, but I'm going to guess it's Lycianthes rantonnetii (also sometimes sold as Solanum rantonnetii) http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=lycianthes&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=rantonettii&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search&searcher[species]=rantonnetii

Can't help you too much on care--I had one planted in the garden at my old house and I never did anything to it besides water it and occasionally prune it a little and it did just fine. Since yours is in a container I'm sure a balanced fertilizer every now and then would be helpful, but other than that since you've had it for 3 yrs and it's doing fine I'd keep doing what you've been doing.

Can't see the blooms really well either, but sometimes the Star Potato is sold as a Potato Tree. That seems like it would be a little out of your zone though.

ecrane3 - That is her. Oh, thank you so much. I want to pot her up to a bigger one. Can't get too big because I have to haul her inside every fall.

Carolyn - Yes! They made her into a standard. I saw bushes and though "that can't be the same thing".

I am a newby at gardening. But I learn fast. :-)
