Rosalie — an oldie but a goodie

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Don't get me wrong. I would jump at the chance of owning more doubles and triples, but singles tend to produce so many more blooms. That's what I hope to get from this little girl. Right now the blooms are a pale pink, but she should get darker later. Her blooms are nodding, thick and feel waxy. I love aureas and she has lots of aurea in her.

Here's a close-up of her skirt to show the waxy look of her shirt. I'll have to back this evening to smell her fragrance. I hope she looks like this by this summer.

The blooms don't hang on that one, to the left you have one there with different kind of leaves what is that if you don't mind me asking. I bought some cuttings from a guy and there noids just liked the color there orange but the leaf looks like that different than any I have ever seen

Dana, that's a Hibiscus mutabilis, Confederate Rose, cutting I was given late this past fall. It had just rooted so I put it in the greenhouse with my Brugs to wait until spring planting.

You are exacley right well thats a good one not even a brug lol What i meant yous is very nice the flowersw don't hand straight down thats really neat. very nice color too :)

I hope she darkens with later flushes. Her pod parent is Rothkirch, an aurea species wildform (meaning she was discovered in the wilds of Columbia) whose flowers are either slightly upright our stick straight out. Rothkirch is very rare because her cuttings are almost impossible to root. Rosalie has a lot of her mother's characteristics, but is much easier to root.

Thats why Rothkirch is pricey compared to others, I really like the way she nods. There talking this year cold hanging out right into March thats going to drive me crazy.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

We're due for a freeze the next 3 nights. Last year we has 2 or 3 late freeze at the end of March. According to the USDA the last frost for my area is the first week of March. Hah! They don't mention all the "late frosts". So I haven't been taking my Brugs out of the greenhouse until early April. Most days are nice. It's the nights that might damagel the Brugs. But there are days like the one tomorrow where the "high" will be 40ºF. It would be nice to have a mountain range between us and Canada to stop that cold arctic air from reaching us.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

My brugs have been in the garage for a couple of nights now. I can move them back out today, I guess. Those huge pots are heavy.

We're still getting freezing weather at night and some daytime temperatures in the low 40s. In the last 2 weeks, I've gone through 2 - 40 lb propane tanks and most of a third and last one. I panicked late last night because the temperature in the greenhouse had gone down to 45ºF before the heater kicked in. Meanwhile, I had visions of icicles forming on my Brugs. They are so close to the last frost date. I don't want to lose them now.

Fortunately, I talked the gentleman who helped my work the heifers this morning to go fill the 2 empty tanks for me. So I'm set for a while.

I hope all goes well for you, I thought we were done with snow, but not a chance it's Baccck, looking like a blizzard at times, I am sure you're sooo glad to be out of Ohio, I would move if I had the chance too, but for now the basement has too do

Elizabeth,
AS we get older, snow is not as appealing, but at the time, the only one looking forward to leaving Ohio was my DH. Our 2 sons and I wanted to stay. My DH gets itchy feet every so often. I, on the other hand, like to set deep roots and don't like to move once I'm settled. My roots had definitely settled over the 4 year stay near New Richmond. Strange because I still considered California home. I still do and I've been here almost 9 years. What I miss most after my children is my garden. I planted every single plant in that garden. Being right next to the Colorado River and all the livestock ponds around here, we have so many water moccasins that I'm afraid to plant anything bushy in the ground. We have a nice assortment of poisonous snakes — water moccasins, timber rattlesnakes, copperheads and coral snakes.

I have freshly filled propane tanks. The gentleman who helps me with the ranch at times consented to go fill 2 of them for me. I'm ready for another bout with the weather.

Veronica
