Is there one?
Austin/Central Texas Roundup???
Not that I know of, but you could host one if there is an interest, which I imagine there would be.
Josephine.
Let me know if anyone is interested and I might sponser one in San Marcos, TX.
Sure, I'd be interested in going! In the past, good locations to do it have been a problem... the S.A. area people don't seem to want to pay a lot for pavilions like they do in other areas. In the meantime, there is a swap in San Antonio that isn't a DG RU...March 13, at MacArthur Park on the NE side.
Oh, and BTW, I forgot to mention there will be a plant sale going on at Eisenhower Park on the 20th of March. I think it might be a native plant only sale since I heard about it from the native plant people, but not sure.
Jujube, I would probably go just so I can meet you, if the date doesn't conflict with something else of course, I would love to see Linda too.
Ooh a roadtrip. Sounds like a chance to meet new people. I'm up for it. :)
How many people would you expect to be there at once? I could do it at my house because I have a large yard. I could do it at my orchard but that is 17 miles out of town in the middle of nowhere. Also, if it rains, there is nowhere to park. There is a park right downtown on the river which is always nice. I could organize the local group Edible San Marcos who specialize in growing edible plants. I guess I would have to know how many people at once, would we need tables, when do we want to do it and so on.
If I do it at my house, I could show off my 2000 gallon rainwater collection system and give info on how to do one.
Usually it is good to have it at a place where there is parking and shelter in case of rain. We have ours at a park with a pavilion.
It would help it you read the thread that Sheila posted so you can see how it works
Here is the thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1074642/
There are swaps taking place April 10, May 2, and May 15.
It is good if you can have two weeks in between swaps so people don't wear out.
Josephine.
I'm definitely interested. I travel to other parts of TX and LA for RUs. It would be great to have one closer. Spring comes a little earlier for us also.
Yeah. We did have the Boerne RU in someone's yard, but most people parked across the street at that empty lot. I have noticed with swaps in general that after someone who has one at their house/yard, they don't ever seem to repeat it with a second one...so it probably isn't something the host or hostess enjoyed much. I remember going to my first swap, in Spicewood, way in the country...they had tarps up because it rained. And we parked in a field...rained so much some of the cars had to be pulled out of the mud by a tractor including mine. It was a hoot! And there was one near La Vernia area at someone's place in the country, rain only started when people were leaving. Oh, and bathroom/restroom facility is pretty important.
I will research if San Marcos has something like this on the cheap side. My wife didnt like the bathroom idea when I mentioned it to her cause we have 3 dogs and 7 cats. I guess the next problem would be where to get all the tables. If someone else has a good idea dont be afraid to bring it up.
Most parks have picnic tables and people can bring folding tables and chairs.
Uh oh....I sense the onset of RU Fever....pulse quickening, racing thoughts (mostly about what plants do I have to trade?)...kind of a semi-restlessness that causes sleep to come slowly........a 3rd Spring RU? (4th for you Charlene)
I'd like to see Linda again too,....as well as meet new friends / DGers
Okay. San Marcos does have a pavillion that can hold over 100 people that is right near the Rio Vista waterfalls/rapids. It is 100 dollars a day. There are picnic tables, bbq pits and bathrooms. What else do we need?
It looks like you have what you need, now you need a date and enough people to attend and share the cost of the pavilion, also you need to reserve the place and pay the fee, to be recovered later.
Be sure you have enough people coming to cover the $100, usually we don't charge guests only members, so you need at least 20 members.
Josephine.
Before I post a signup sheet, I would like to get a feel for a date. Would March 27th or May 30th be best?
My feelings are that March 27th would be good for Spring fever and if you already have the plants to trade but bad if you are trading seedlings. You wouldnt have as much grow time.
May 30th is good for seedlings but you are just about to hit the hot season and dont have as much establishment time once you put it in the ground.
Thoughts?
Do you know yet if those dates are available? Later might be better since we're starting the planning late, but we'll see.
I have Zilkerfest at the botanical garden on the 27th&28th of March.....but can probably get away for the afternoon. If the 27th works out for others, I'll make it also. May 30th is over Memorial Day weekend, I think... It's fine with me also, but I can't remember a Memorial Day without rainstorm or flood! Just pick a date and remember...you can't please everyone. "If you plan it, they will come..."
The March date is my dd's bd and I'll be in FL with her.
The May 30th could possibly work, but that is my anniversary, so dh would have to agree. He prob would though, heck it'd get him off the hook for taking me out to eat.
LOL
Maybe we could come and spend the night before and have a night out! Hmm I'm liking that idea already!
Memorial Day weekend will be a nightmare down there I guess May 30th is out. Maybe June 5th. The Rio Vista falls are three falls in natural spring water. You can slide down them, water kayak and take the kids so they are extremely popular. On a holiday weekend, they are obnoxiously popular.
So the dates are March 27th and June 5th.
I've never been to a Roundup and am a newbie. Would love to actually attend one!!! Please let me know if you get a date set.
Leslie
My kids live in Austin so I would try to make it too.
I suppose either one would be fine with me. And my friend Sheila might go also. She likes the swaps!
June 5th suits me better, we will be through with the other swaps, and plant sales by then.
Josephine.
I vote for June 5th.
June 5th sounds good to me
June 5th, that's getting down into the growing season. I'm mostly a veggie grower so won't have much in the way of plants to swap.
This may be a cool Spring and Summer so we may have veggies still going at that time. Could we maybe bring fresh veggies from the garden?
Jerry
I think June 5th sounds geat! Maybe my garden will have recovered a little by then.
Vegetables would be wonderful to have.
Here is the link to the sign up sheet. I think we need about 15 people before I would reserve the pavillion.
