suggestion for soil for protea and puya combo

Santa Cruz, CA(Zone 9b)

I am thinking of putting a protea and a puya in a large pot together. Does this sound like a good idea? If so, should i use potting soil woth sand added or part potting soil and part cactus mix? Anyone have experience with these plants in large containers?

They both need good drainage and don't like to be too wet so in that sense they'd probably be OK together. But I think Puya prefers a balanced fertilizer, and proteas can't have phosphorus so their fertilization needs may be incompatible. They'll both get big enough that they could be in a pot by themselves too so I would probably give them each their own pot.

Thx good thoughts
