Katie suggested that I start a thread on Earthbox growing in the Pacific NW, and I thought it was a great idea, so here I am .
I LOVE growing in Earthboxes, though I also grow a lot in the ground, using raised beds and the square foot gardening method.
My favorite Earthbox crops are:
Peppers, especially hot peppers
Lettuce (keeps it clean)
Parsley
Basil
I'll start with some photos of my crops, and I would love to hear from other Earthbox users in the area!
Growing in EarthBoxes
Corn in Earthboxes? Huh. I love looking at your vegetables. Makes me think I could even try to do peppers . . .
I know. My husband just shook his head when I planted corn in earthboxes. Boy, was he surprised when we harvested wonderful corn from both boxes. They used MASSIVE amounts of water, however, and pretty much filled the whole water compartment with roots.
I like the idea of strawberries in earth boxes - i'm assuming the snails/slugs stay away?
I have not had any problems with slugs causing damage to my strawberries, and I do have a lot of slugs in the garden.
I've had a few with any strawberries hidden underneath and laying on the ground. But I think birds and squirrels are mostly my culprits. The dogs haven't yet discovered strawberries, but I don't think they're far away from it.
Oh yes, if they fall to the ground, all bets are off :)
