Container soil

Pittsfield Twp, MI(Zone 5b)

Do you have a favorite COMMERCIAL container mix, and do you amend it with something extra?

Danville, IN

I go to an area garden center and buy a huge bag of their Metro Mix for under $20. They use it for all of their annual flowers and vegetables and all of their potted plants. It's great, and loads cheaper than the fancy stuff they sell at big box stores, which in my opinion is highly over-rated, especially the ones that contain fertilizer which have been known to burn seedling roots. When spring comes, for my potted plants, I use a 3-month time release Osmocote, applied in late April or May. Seems to work just fine. I usually give a dose of fish emulsion or compost tea later in the summer.

If you're not averse to driving over to Galesburg, Michigan, you might want to call Michigan Grower Products. They make a pretty good range of mixes, and if you're doing greenhouse-size production, they may fit the bill for you. They'll also custom blend (again, for commercial growers), adding Actino Iron, FertiSorb and other amendments. Their website is http://surefill.com.

I prefer Pro Mix but will use Miracle grow. I usually amend with perlite depending on the plant's soil needs.

What Steve (FertiSorb). Or .... Telly's Greenhouse has two locations, one in Troy and one in Shelby. They sell Fafard products. Their 'Nursery Mix' and their '51L Mix' are quite good for a pre-made mix. They would probably include your order with one of the many shipments they'll soon be receiving. http://tellys.com/contact_us

Alternately: Since you're close to Matthaei Botanical Gardens on Dixboro, you might try calling Connie there, and asking her if she knows who sells Fafard products in the neighborhood. Their phone is (734) 647-7600. If you want Connie's email addy, contact me via D-mail.

I know you wanted a commercial soil, but you can easily make a better soil than what is commercially available for considerably less $.
