OOOH, goody - gender guessing - I haven't a clue!

Lodi, United States

Two months is a little early to guess...but top knot swept back with a broad comb--boy. Puffy mushroom do, as much to the front as the back--girl. Boys also tend to stand upright, while the girls hunker down and tip forward.

The pictures on the lower section show it well:

I don't have any guesses on male/female, but beautiful, beautiful, beautiful birds you have. Love that buff color. Our Silkies are Blues, but I would love buff ones, so pretty.

I have blue and black cohins blue is my favorite color in the chickens tho.I think there is one blue in my mix.

Ty so much for the site you sent catscan. I looked it over and i can see the diffrence on that site i guess i will just have to wait till they are older

Lodi, United States

It is hard until their poofs puff.

But don't discount how they hold themselves either. The boys really do hold their heads up and the girls tend to tip forward with their heads pulled in.

I have some males that I couldn't tell until they started crowing- at almost a year of age! They have no streamers, no male traits at all.... but they're fertile and they crow.

Here's one I am currently trying to sex. It was hatched in early October. I think it is a male.

Looks like a roo to me too.

It's a showgirl, and not one I'm keeping, but I prefer to sell them sexed. I tend to just eat extra roos. He's an ok bird, and will feather out more, but not breeding quality for me.

No crowing, though.

ok im learning so i have to ask why does that silkie have a naked neck like a turkin? is there a variety that has no feathers on the neck?Mine are all fully feathered i thin mine are also bearded.

Lodi, United States

That is why it is called a "show girl"...it is a silkie with the naked neck gene.

awesome ! i thought you guys ment it was a show quality silkie. giggle now i understand. I havent run across any on the web yet but now im lookin.Giggle this is such a fun place. im so glad i joined.I have learned so much in the last few days.

:) i was lurking reading & its good that someone explained a "show girl" bc i also thought it was one that was show quality!

your silkies are pretty she_wolfie. I have a bantam partridge silkie. She's sitting here next to me right now on a batch of eggs. :)

Thank you im gonna enjoy them im sure. I have always wanted to get some but i dont want 25 chicks that seems to be the min. for most hatcherys.I found these on craigslist they were a school project and I guess the people live in town so it was time for them to leave the moms bedroom.I now have the 6 chicks plus one white roo so i have a great start. They are very tame no doubt the kids held them alot.I just hope they are mostly hens as Im gonna get too attached to them to get rid of the roos.

If I had naked neck chickens I'd feel too inclined to have to knit them little NWDs (scarves for newbies)...lol!

Richmond, TX

Me too Loreen - if I could knit.

I found out my silkie chicks hatched out on christmas eve.Im sure that the white and dark red are both roos.I feel pretty secure that the lightest buff is a pullet, blue pullet, black probly pullet.I am not sure yet about the medium buff to me it looks like a pullet but is begining to chest bump with the boys a little so may end up being a roo.I will post some individual pics of them tomorrow.
Thanks
Tina
