Seedling brugs

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

OK,the cold weather is here!I've been dreding it but I knew it was going to happen. So 3 days ago I started dragging in all my tropicals and house plants.I lost count at 151!!!My question is ,I have 6 brugs (hybids)I started from seed .They are about 2 foot tall right now.Would it be better if I cut them back or leave them alone.I'm not sure if they will root, the woody part is pretty far down at the bottom, but there is the white specks that I assume would put out the roots.I'll be taking cuttings of all the brugs as soon as they are done blooming. The unnamed white and what you guys thought might be a frosty pink are blooming along with versicolor peach. The Dr.Suess cutting that tiG sent me has buds now along with 3 others that I don't know what they are, plus my unnamed yellows are about to open. Also I have some unknown hybrid seeds, and some Aurea hybrid (it says Lot 78372b on the seed packet)There are about 15 seeds in that one .I know I can't grow them all to blooming size.( need a greenhouse)Should I start them now?Or wait.I have a seedpod starting on my versicolor peach that I crossed with my pink.Hope it stands the shock of comming in the house. The pod on the pink is huge. Since my Issabella, and other cuttings didn't bloom I'll be taking cuttings of them now.How do you guys keep track of what cutting is what?I was planning on rooting in water ,so do I use a different glass for each cutting?Or would masking tape wrapped around it work?

CC, I bought a mini blind and sat and cut it into markers all at one time. I put them in a container with my paint pen also, and when I cut something I put a marker in there right away. I've put several in one glass, but all the same kind. I do know that fresh seed is better than old, but you'll have to make that decision:) Where did you get your aurea seed??????

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I had received them in the spring and missplaced them along with lots of other seed.I don't remember where I got them,I'm pretty sure it was on the GW.I figured someone else might recognize the lot # and they would have an idea of where I got them. I am so disorganized I can't stand it.

CC, since we're the only ones up this morning:) if it were me, I'd plant them now. If you've had them since spring, it would be too long to wait til spring comes again. Maybe when you get them up and going, we could trade seedlings, I have arboreas going now, and today I'm planting a mixed packet I got from Earl at valleygrow and a packet of sanguineas. I'm an optimist:)

I have a packet of Dr Suess, pinks and golds mixed hybrid seed coming from valleygrow too.The only reason I'm home and on the computer is that I finally called in sick today.I've been sick for a week and finally went to the Dr. yesterday. He says "you have the Flu,you cant get the flu at this time of year but you've got the flu! "Fever ,headache, body is killing me and exausted. It was killing me driving ,and thats not real physical! He said to stay in bed till sunday and I should feel better by monday.I have a show in Rochester on sunday and I have to wash ,dry and primp 14 chickens tommorow. YEAH! I can just lay in bed!!Yea,right! Then I went out to feed the creatures and the horses had broken out of the fence and broken open all the bags of feed that I bought yesterday.Yup,I can just lay around and get better,LOL

CC hope you are felliing better I always do right after I hang up the phone from calling in sick. Any ways brug seeds are much better planted fresh. Its my understanding that the older they become the less greamation rate you have. I got the same dr suess seeds from V.G. and got 25 out of 35 seeds and some are still comming up after 60 some days

Dr.Sues is a wonderful parent plant and pollen donor. Do you happen to know what the seed you have is crossed to? I have a few Dr.Sues x Ecuador pink seedlings that have bloomed. Arlene has posted one of her own Dr.Sues x Ecuador pinks as well. I have to say, the Dr.Sues and Charles Grimaldi both seem to be excellent parent plants, although I must confess I have not hybridized with Charles...I have seen a number of Charles seedlings and have been very impressed.

Brugman: Don't you have a charles grimaldi. I can send you a truckload.LOL I have aurea seedlings and arborea ones ( good size) for you also. Email me.

But should I cut the seedlings and try to root them or will they bloom earlier if I just leave them alone?

Hi, CC...this is a guess, they should bloom next year anyway i think, if you keep them in large pots and/or get in the ground as soon as you can. do you want cuttings for multiplying or are you going to trade cuttings? is your seed pod really long? don't freak out, i am pretty sure it will lose a lot of leaves, mine did last winter that i brought in. it sounds like you have a lot of work to do! let me know what you do, okay, i am trying to pick everyone's brains, also let me know about the seedlings, right now i seem to be mainly an insignis type of brgger, have baby versicolors but not a lot of aureas.

CC, thinking of you and hoping you are well for this weekend!!!!!!!!!

Arlene,
My guess would be, you have a lot of hybrids with aurea in them, just not pure aurea's. Reason being, most of my personal hybrids come from hybrids that were created with aurea parentage. The really nice aurea hybrids have more than 50% aurea parentage though in my oppinion. Aurea's seem to throw out far fewer seeds as well. I have as many as 500+ seeds on some seedpods and as few as 28 on others depending on species and cross. Aurea's tend to be lower on the seed number hence making them rarer.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

you know, that's the first time you've said that!!! I didn't know, and that helps explain why the last few I want on my list are so hard to come by.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Brugman, i kinda thought so. there is one white i am thinking is a lot aurea, it has almost no tendrils...is that right? it's getting ready to bloom again. BTW, i'll take whites that bloom a lot anyday, just have to keep finding more places to plant them.

Arlene,
I have a few aurea hybrids with small tendrils or almost no tendrils as you put it. I know that many say that aurea hybrids tend to have longer tendril length, but this is not always the case. I can tell you that seedpod lenght varies as well depending on how tall the plant is as well to some extent. The older/taller a plant is the bigger/longer the seedpods to some extent. Personally, I like the wide variety of seedlings which have mixed parentage. My Dr.Sues x Ecuador pink that I have has a versicolor seedpod and candida to versicolor looking flower. The one you have may have a candida type seedpod. Its the wide variation in crosses between different species that draws me to use such Brugs in hybridizing and one reason I think people are drawn to Brugs like Dr.Sues and Charles Grimaldi for hybridizing. They may be older hybrids, but they throw out a wide bit of diversity. I can't say it enough how impressed I have been with Charles Grimaldi seedlings and I don't even have that hybrid. I do have a few of its seedlings though from other hybridizers and for that I feel blessed as those seedlings I feel will throw out even more diversity. Perhaps cross some of those seedlings to Dr.Sues x Ecuador pink? Remember, I like diversity and mixing of the species with a lean towards aurea. Not everyone has the same tastes so others will go towards other crosses for there hybrids....
ps,
Arlene,
If your willing to meet me, I am willing to give you a whole slew of my earliest whites. Everything from Suaveolens, Insignis, to versicolor types from my Dr.Sues x Frosty pink, Ecuador pink and Solid gold Crosses from last year. Throw in a few in color as well, but only if you promise to give one cutting of each away next year.

Sure, Brugman, just drop me an email, can't say no to brugs. just came from the swap, met Mr and Mrs Irish. it was great, i came home with only 5-6 plants this time! that was my goal. Irish gave me V peach and dr suess babies, i am going to send them to tig, she still has sase packs she is sending out. passed out quite a few brugs. Irish, i gave V peach and dr suess to don who lives down your way, as you were leaving, also a brugman white.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

oh, I bet the swap was great fun!!! I sure wish I could have come, but it will take wild horses to keep me away in the spring!!! tell us what you got:)
thanks for the cuttings Arlene, I will go ahead and contact the next couple of people on the list and get things started with them.
