Looks like it's working! What all are you growing?

Great idea! Love the repurposing of the cardboard boxes. I'm using some to contain my winter sowing jugs this year. Curious as to how they willl hold up?

Do you work for Frito-Lay? Yes do share what all your growing.

No I don't work for Frito Lay but I can see why you asked. Actually I have a friend in the vending business and she saves the boxes for me. They are pretty sturdy and held up real well last week when we had almost as much rain in one week than we usually get in a year. These boxes are in a middle school. They had no budget and wanted a veggie garden. I cut a hole about 8"x8" in the bottom of the box so we had contact with soil and then layered in coffee grounds and shredded paper topping the box off with about 4" of potting mix. We have carrots, lettuce, onions, radishes, peas, spinach and bok choy. We also have ripe tomatoes growing in a homemade ebucket. Three other schools have come to look at the garden...they couldn't believe that we were growing veggies in cardboard boxes.

What an incredble, imaginative garden. I'd be in awe also, what a fantastic job you've done. Can't wait to hear what your yields are from these boxes.

lol That was my first thought, that yall sure don't have as much rain as we've been getting. Teehee subverting the processed snack food container...

That probably makes good sense for a school, just start over with new boxes with the new school year. Pop another box over the top if it gets frosty. Put a bigger box around the outside for insulation when it gets seriously hot.

Did the kids pick the crops?

That's fantastic! Proud of you!

Here is what I'm thinking of the upside, when the cardboard is done, it will become good organic material for the soil, a good way to use up what we have in the way of recycling hey? Arizona get much rain? As that would be the only downside I could think of, if the boxes got too wet --- goodbye garden. We get more rain in one day here than most folks do in a year sometimes I think. This heavy rainfall lately, has kept me indoors when I should be outdoors prepping my garden. LOL

Joy we have had more rain here this month than we usually get in a year. The streets were flooded, the ravines were running and some still are. I had puddles of standing water in my box area. These boxes laughed at the rain. I know a guy who said he used to box garden in Oregon...lots of rain there. You would be suprised how hearty these boxes are.

Mmmm, don't get spoiled......

Speaking of boxes? I plan to break some down and put on the carpet of my one spare bedroom to start my seed starting soon. If this winter does what I think it will, since it was off to a late start, that means it will be late in going and I am not taking any chances with my tomatoes. Worse case scenario, I will just have to pot them up to 1 gallon grow bags and then keep them in the room until it gets warm enough to chance moving them to the new greenhouse I have being designed and made this next two weeks. Need lots of room for 50-60 tomato babies so the cardboard thing will work fine there. I have some ideas in mind for using parts from other things in my garden this year to save me some money, and will be useful, it's always good to recycle.
