A friend sent me seeds that are fresh 1-31 -10 when they were harvasted do they need to sit awhile I opened a couple and the seed is not hard. Maybe they need to sit or were they harvasted to early? If you were to plant them with the cork on are they supposed to be covered lightly or not. New at this advise greatly appreciated. Thanks ..Dana
Advise on seeds please
you can plant them any time, some people soak them, I don't I do just barely nick the cork part to check and make sure there is a seed inside, some times they are empty, I use a pencil to poke a hole in the dirt, then just put the seed in.
Doris
Thanks Doris, but what about the fact that the seed is not firm is that ok? Seed was more like a worm not firm at all
Dana,
Since the seed is fresh, you don't need to soak the seed. Use sterile potting or seed starting mix. I peel the cork off my seed, but you don't really need to. However if you don't peel, be sure to keep the humidity high or the corky cover may adhere to the emerging cotyledons. I peel for the same reason Doris nicks hers — to make sure there is a seed inside.
Everything I've read states not to cover the seed as light is needed for the seeds to germinate. Just press the seeds firmly onto the starting media for good seed/soil contact.
Since you seeds are fresh, they will probably germinate very quickly, but it is possible some will take longer. Transplant each seedling into it own small pot when it has its first true leaves.
Thanks again for the info. I just planted some I bought i soaked them and peeled those the seed was hard but these seeds stick to your finger is thats because its fresh? I nuked the dirt and water
I am puzzeled by that. I have never had Brug. seeds that were soft, in fact the cork part is rather hard, I would suspect they froze but you are in Fl. so that could not be the problem.I guess you will just plant them and hope for the best.
Cork is the way its supposed to be the seed part is really soft like wet spagetti try to press it in the dirt and it sticks to your fingers like spagetti
Dana, You said a friend sent them to you. From where did they originate? If they weren't well insulated, they just may have frozen in transit. Was the cork a dark brown? I wonder if they are weren't still green. The only time I have ever seen seeds like that is when they were partly rotten because they stayed in the water too long.
They came from georgia i think they weren't cooked all the way.
hahaha they better not be cooked. If the cork was hard and brown they were ready, but apparently something happened, too wet, too hot, or too cold, if the seeds were gummy it is my oppinion that they will not be any good, and since you purchased them my advice is to notify the person for a replacement, if you have a camera take a picture of the seeds and show them.
Doris
Doris thanks for the onfo but they came from a friend so nothing lost nothing gained lol Thanks
Dana,
A number of my Brugs have pods on them. I crossed some of them, but moths made the rest. I don't know who the pollen parents are for those pods. The pods, 3 months or less, are healthy and growing slowly. My Brugs have not gone dormant, their growth has slowed down quite a bit though. So it will probably take longer than usual for the pods to mature. I will have more seed than I can use. I can send you some if you still want to try growing from seed.
Thanks Betty!Sorry call you Betty even though thats not your name sorry. I am trying to get a little experince here once mine get going, going to try to do some cross pollenating myself. Check my trade list if I have something here you would like a peice of just let me know thanks again Dana :)
That's OK, Dana. Betty was my nickname when I was growing up. If I was called Veronica, especially by my parents or grandparents, I knew I was in trouble. LOL
Wow! I just took a look at your "have" list. This spring and summer, you'll have to share some photos of your plants! When your plants get up to sharing size, I did see 3 or 4 that I would love to have. I have a couple that are on your want list. I'll send you D-mail.
Thats fine lol you remind me of Clare in the plumeria forum real nice lady very helpful to everyone. I think you could be sisters!
I plant all my brug seeds fresh, straight from the pod to the pot whenever possible. For many, the seeds will be soft just like you mentioned and somewhat slimy. I do not peel fresh seeds.
Fred
Thanks Fred i peeled a little to see the seed then planted it to make sure there was one.
