This one is Suncoast Lavender Silk. blooming for the first time. Some of the leaves have brown spots on the edges (but not all the leaves) and I have no idea what that is from. None of my other violets have the spots. Any suggestions?
Standard Variegated Violet
I was just reading in a back issue of the AV magazine that if you touching variegated leaves bruises them easily. Maybe this is the case?
That's really interesting.....I've never heard that before and I always touch my plants. Thanks Shanika!!
beautiful!
Well, I touch all my plants' leaves so I know that's not the cause of the brown spots on the edges. Can't see that it would be either fertilizer or water or light...as each violet gets exactly the same amount and kind as the others. Mystery to me....but wondering if it will eventually kill the plant? ChuLin
I have spots on my variegated AVS sometimes. It doesn't seem to hurt the plant.
Hey ChuLin,
You have some beauties there :) I don't know if this will help you but here it is...I had the same effect on my snuggles a.v. I guess I noticed it more on that plant than the others because of the variegation. Anyway, I think my problem was my water. I didn't let it sit long enough before I used it and the chlorine, etc. seemed to have been a factor. I started filling up jugs of water and waited at least 3 days before using and that seemed to take care of my problem.

Connie you wait three days before using your water - oh my I'm only waiting a day or two. I guess I need more containers to hold the water that's sitting out so I have enough water to water with.
Here it is again after I decided something was wrong and I started letting the water sit longer before using it. Poor Snuggles still has a couple of leaves with the brown on her but I am not seeing any on the new growth. Everyone's water system is different and they may use more chemicals in ours than others. Just a thought :)

This site has some very good information.

i know that sometimes i get spots also, but was told it was from fertlizer, do you leach your pots every so ofter? that usually does the trick as it's a build up of fertlizer i was told.
mrsbonnie
Good point, mrsbonnie. Although I was not using fertilizer or watering much at all while trying to root my leaf. That was what puzzled me. I am sure there are several factors that contribute to the brown spots.
According to the site above, light can be a factor??
Thanks for all your input. I am just mistified as all my violets get the same water, light and fertilizer, and at the same times. So I wonder why this one would have the spots, and non of the rest do? Anyway, its blooming and looks healthy except for those spots. So I guess I can be glad for that, huh? And I do use filtered water on all of them. ChuLin
ChuLin - variegates can be a bit more sensitive than solidplants . . . is it possible that your Suncoast Lavender Silk had water droplets sit too long, or maybe leaf edges touched water? Either way, I think it looks great! A few of my plants have the same spotting, and I am chalking it up to water droplets, as I do mist my plants every other week.
