Hi Marie,
Lachenalia?

Lachine, MI

Spanish Bluebell?

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Probably not Lachenalia. My mind goes to Brodiaea/Triteleia, but they don't bloom at this time of year. Take a look here and see what you think:

Brodiaea: http://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbswiki/index.php/Brodiaea
Triteleia: http://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbswiki/index.php/Triteleia

Also, pictures of the flower from the front might be helpful.

I will try and get a closer picture of the flower. The foilae reminds me of a hyacinth but I can not figure out what one of those would be doing in my SA pot.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks! Not that I'll know anything more from it! LOL

I know what you mean about the odd bulbs popping up. That happens to me sometimes too, and I can't for the life of me figure out how. Here's the PBS page for Hyacinthus: http://pacificbulbsociety.org/pbswiki/index.php/Hyacinthus The three species definitely look similar to your plant.

Edited to correct spelling error.

i need to see if it is fragrant those pictures are pretty close. If it is one it survived no water from May through the end of august.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Well that would make sense since I think they're summer dormant.

Put it in the ID forum. They are so good over there!

A Camassia maybe? This is Blue Danube, but there are others. How tall did you say it was marie?

The closeup definitely looks like Brodiaea. It's the only blue/purple flower I can find that has that dark stripe on the petals.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Is th foilage on a Brodiaea like a hyacinth? Do they have a fragrance? I finally went out and took a sniff and it is very hyacinth smelling. It is not very big maybe 6-8 inches high. I would say it is not a
Camassia since the flower stalks are so short. But now youhave me wondering if I could grow those here :o)

It looks exactly like my hyacinths when they get tired and need a good dose of compost. I started watching this thread when you first posted and from the beginning I thought hyacinth.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

It is not the standard hyacinth. It is putting out more bloom stalks and I have only had my hyacinths put out one. But I think it is something in that family.

spokane valley, WA(Zone 5a)

It looks like Roman hyacinth, Hyacinthus orientalis albulus. They usually are about 8-10 inches tall but may be taller potted, light fragrance and beautiful purple bulbs, summer dormant.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thanks Lisa I bet you are right since I know I have ordered from you. Is this one you carried on your site? I think I willsee if I can push the dirt away from this bulb and see what the color is.

Los Altos, CA(Zone 9a)

Sure looks like a roman hyacinth to me.

I had some found white hyacinths that are very similar--narrow petals, multiple stems, 6-8 in tall -- that I suspected were the white form of

French Roman hyacinth. Here's an old photo showing the blooms and the second stem with the buds just coming up.

Hi Marie,
yes I carry it but didn't find that you ordered it from me, just took a quick look at previous orders so may have missed it. The bulb may not show the purple until it is mature, with dutch hyacinth they are purple if dark flowering and white if light colored blooms, not sure if this is true for other colors of Roman or the hybrids bred from Romans and dutch called "festival hybrids".
BTW I plan to ship your latest order tomorrow or Monday.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Ok, I changed my mind. After looking at buggycrazy's site as well as several others, I agree that it's a hyacinth! LOL
