OK now here we go again, I love those leaves, and the list continues.

Dee

Ditto! Very pretty Carol.

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Carol,

How long to those blooms last? The plant looks very closely related to H. hellwigiana, and if it behaves the same, the blooms only last a couple of days for me.

Doug

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

They last about 5-6 days...still look OK now.

(Zone 1)

That is a pretty one! I love the leaves even more than the bloom but even the bloom is pretty! Can that one take a little sun?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

MOST hoyas that take bright indirect light can take morning or late afternoon sun.

Gosh, sometimes I really, really love watering day. This morning I discovered two fully opened umbels of flowers on this plant - H. myrmecopa. These are its first flowers. They're really tiny, the corona is about 1/4" wide and light green and the recurved corolla is a paler green, almost white, with a bit of pink in some rolled back corollas. I think the corollas look like a sheer almost shiny fabric.

Here's the whole plant. I got it as a cutting in July/07.

Christine, Very nice plant!

Are the leaves on that plant hard and slightly thick? The leaf shape of your H. myrmecopa looks exactly like my H. revoluta, which has never bloomed for me. The leaves on my revoluta have the look of a succulent rather than the the traditional look of a typical Hoya leaf, and I am wondering if H. myrmecopa does too.

Doug

Thanks Doug. Yes, the leaves are a similar shape to revoluta and fairly are succulent, but smaller and I think a brighter green.

Thank you Christine! Looks like a new one I'll have to put on my list.

Christine, I am glad to see what a "grown-up" plant looks like. My poor little thing has 3 little leaves and 2 nodes. I got it in Oct, but there is no new growth on it. Do you find that this one is slow to get started?

Thanks,

Dee

Hi Dee. I don't really remember, but I do find that any cutting I start in the fall doesn't start to do well until around March. I took cuttings a few weeks ago that are throwing out roots like crazy. I don't think its because of the type of hoyas they are, its more the time of year; the days are getting longer and the plants, even indoor, are responding.

Thanks Christine.

None of mine have been flowering just lately, although when I get home tomorrow I expect pubicalyx, densifolia (what was previously IDed as golamcoiana "Los Banos" but Ted Green believes is densifolia), and possibly "Kapit Borneo" will have flowers open. All over the place australis ssp rupicola is flowering madly but mine still only has small buds. Probably 2 to 3 weeks before those open.

My macgillivrayi has been growing madly since I took Carol's advice and gave it some poultry manure. Hopefully it'll pay me back later with masses of blooms.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

YAY....

noonamah, Australia

Yeah, thanks Carol. The macgillivrayi had grown even more when I got home. It seems to be responding more than the others. But I gave them all another dose. It's still the wet season and the last dose was about a month ago.

The only one with flowers open so far is H. pubicalyx. The "Kapit Borneo" and densifolia will open soon but I'll be away at work again. The H. australis ssp rupicola buds in the hoya-ry (rockery) are still probably a few weeks off from flowering.

Wow...I would love to see your garden.

My pubicalyx cv. Royal Hawaian Purple is really blooming!!! Spreading the chicken poop in the greenhouse now....everything is taking off!!!. i was at Ted and Dorothy Green's and Ted just treated his too...you could almost hear the growth!!!

Teguise, Spain

Carol, what months are your summer ones?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Usually May - August. We have a fairly long season of 'switching over' March-May and August-October when the summer patterns start to form and when they are dying out... we are affected alot by the weather north of us...marching across the North Pacific and then, of course, the hurricane season which runs from May thru November...

What about yours?

H. finlaysonii (probably)

About the same Carol...I was just watching when you were starting to add the chicken poop and start the heavier feeding

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Giving a good dose of chicken poop now... Ted Green just did his too...the growth is starting madly as is the flowering.

Teguise, Spain

Im on my way ;)) Teaspoon per 5" pot or less, as a guide ?

(Zone 1)

hmm, there's a family a couple of blocks down from us that have a petting zoo ... they have chickens as well as other animals, maybe I should see if they want to donate some chicken poop for my plants!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

It has to be old poop. It is cheap enough by the bag.

OH Dom...I kill with kindness. about a heaping tablespoon to a 4" pot is my style. It doesn't burn.

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

OK, I am game, but where would you buy the stuff, and does it smell, mine are currently in the house?

Dee

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Dee...any garden supply store sold in bags. under 8.00. It smells at first and dogs go crazy over it ...be warned!!!

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

OK, now how do I administer it? Straight from the bag, mix it with a little soil, etc. Guess I will have to wait a little bit till I can move them outside, hopefully in the next 2 weeks. Oh, by the way, does it have the same affect on cats? I don't have a dog, but do have 4 cats.

Thanks,

Dee

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Just dump the stuff on top of the pot...I usually do this after I have watered. Then I wait about 4-5 days and water it in with a lot of water. You want the soil in the pot to be just damp so that the nutrients don't wash out....

North Central, ID(Zone 6a)

Well, my H. davidcummingii has been blooming off and on since summer. It's really happy right now, I guess.....

Hi All! I just joined Dave's Garden -- for two months -- but I think I'll have to update it to annually! lol.
Here's my Hoya -- Bella, I think. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know. There's three umbels; one blooming for about 5 days now.

I've had 4-5 hoyas for about 20 years and had to leave them in NJ when I moved to Canada. Heartbreaking! I got this hoya in a greenhouse nearby. There was a really large plant. I asked how much it was and the woman said it was her dad's. I gave her my sob story, and she gave me a pair of scissors and said "take a cutting". Lucky me!!! Since then I have purchased two cuttings each of Hoya carnosa rubra and variegata.

We're rearranging the living room this week..... I'm hoping to sneak in a few more hoyas. lol.

Yes, you have H. bella there kola - in my opinion its the prettiest hoya flower. Welcome to the forum.

Christine

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Yes.....welcome!!!!

Mount Pearl, Canada

Thanks for the welcome -- and the ID confirmation! I'm glad I found you guys!!!

Here's a pic of my cuttings. One new leaf on the second from left one. It's OK. I know they're slow-growers.

I'm hoping to get a Hoya australis and Hoya shepherdii. I was told they have a chocolate scent...... Is that true?????
