Thought this was a mockingbird when I first saw it. I did not get a picture of its back and only saw it with the naked eye. Seemed to be slate blue/gray and it had a white marking on the wing more like a white notch than a wingbar. Sorry the pic is not the best. Went back to my old broken camera which is not as broken as my new one.
CLOSED: what bird is this?
Loggerhead Shrike. Nice one to get!

Whoohoo! Get to add a new mark in my bird book. I went through this book twice and didn't find it. Thanks for the ID! "Preys on insects, small birds and small animals." Wonder if he was after the goldfinches that I finally lured to my house. Guess they should be able to take care of themselves!
Thanks again.
For future reference re these look-alikes (Mockingbird and Loggerhead Shrike):
If you see it fly away and you would be able to count its wingbeats=Mockingbird
If the wingbeats are way too fast to be counted=Shrike
