The question was asked??? How did the Oil Companies destroy Mom and Pop stores.
ARCO, (Atlantic Richfield Corp) and Seven-Eleven, (Southland Corp) Gobbled up ninety five percent of all mom and pop convenient stores begining in the late sixties.
Southland got its start in Dallas Texas way back in 1927 and quickly teamed up with Citgo, one of the large oil companies and eventually spread so quickly that they finall ran into financial trouble and was bailed out by a Japanese billionaire, and is not owned by the Japanese. It is now the only conglomorant that surpassed McDonalds by approx fifteen hundred stores. They are very large in approx eighteen foreign countries.
Arco (AKA Attlantic Richfield) Fueld its greatest growth by buying out the existing mom and pop stores and then became A M-PM. The history of change is really interesting if it is reasearched. Some of the problem has to rest on those who sell out as much as those who buy out. It's not always that we can't compete, but often times the lure of the quick buck. Same with property sales. I remember a beautiful lush two hundred acre pasture land we had here in the Northwest, It was beautiful to just drive by and see it. It is now a concrete jungle of what is called the SouthCenter Mall. Thats so often what greed does for us. It takes us off of our beautiful homelands and put us in a concrete jungle of drugs and vice and commerce...Haystack
