Nothing Like BocaBob's, but My Winter Garden

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

In spite of the cold mornings (it's been 29º the last two mornings) there is a garden. This garden even survived a 14º morning and several mornings below 20º. Of course it helps with the garden being located on a South facing slope and the use of quality row covers.

Here is mine under cover:

Onions, Garlic, Carrots, Beets, Radish, Turnips, Chinese Cabbage, Head Cabbage, Romaine Lettuce, Leaf Lettuce, Chard (best sub for spinach ever), Kohlrabi, Mustard, Spinach. All this still going good. Cauliflower and Broccoli did well but are all gone.

This year's tomatoes will be planted in 13 gal plastic nursery pots used for trees. The soil will a mixture of 50% garden soil (compost, composted topsoil, orange sand, composted rice hulls) and 50% coir/Perlite 80/20. Just thought I'd try something different this year.

Nice set-up. Nice green stuff. Beautiful looking deer fence. Without the fence....there would be no green stuff.:-)

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I was shocked that my stuff survived those same temps with out being covered.

Beautiful uncover garden there, wonder if that undercover business is to keep them warm or keep us from snatching the goods? LOL

Hi Texasrockgarden!
I just saw your pics from Jan 31. That stack of pots is pretty cool. Could you post a clear picture of it. I a facinated by the creativity of it. It looks like small pots attached to a tree stump. Do you grow strawberries in it? Thanks!

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

Soulsecho, Here you go! Yes, strawberries.

The black stackers can be purchased from a man here on Dave's Garden who lives in Florida. Just ask around.

The temporarily attached green 4" pots are what the original plants came in. They now contain rooted runners and will be transplanted to another stack of stackers within the next several weeks. Hopefully they will bear fruit this fall.

Thanks!
The clear picture was good. I think I know about the guy you spoke of. I'll contact him and get some info. Good luck with the strawberries.
