I don't know if there is enough here to make an identification. I was too far away, I guess.
I have never seen a hawk here in 3 years, so I am hoping a "hawk person" can help me. haha
Guessing sharp-shinned because he seemed kind of smallish.
CLOSED: bad picture of hawk
I think you're right. Resin told me that Cooper's Hawks have red eyes. This one seems to have yellow eyes, so I would go with Sharp-shinned too, but I'll wait for the experts to weigh in.
Eye colour depends on age in both (red in adults, yellow in immatures), so isn't too useful.
I'd agree with immature Sharp-shin on size, small bill, and more 'splotchy' than 'streaky' breast spots, but the tail does look slightly rounded, so I'm not 100% certain.

The tail always seems to be the Id stopper (on Cooper's and Sharp-shinned). Nice capture JulieQ, I,m confident you will see that bird again.
Here's a link, if you scroll down there is a side by side shot of both birds, and what to look for. (have a look at the tails).

Thanks for all the input and the good link. It will help me with identification in the future.
It is just too bad of a picture to tell. I hope I see him again!
