Well I thought our chickens were spoiled, but today I got a copy of "Urban Farm" magazine. They had several articles about raising chickens in urban areas. One story really made me laugh. A couple in Kenner Louisiana bought some baby chicks and turned one of their bedrooms into a chicken room. The chickens really have their own room. They showed a picture of it. Cheerful, bright colors, lots of toys for the chickens to play with, including a step ladder with a padded top, for roosting. Nest boxes lined with blankets. Very clean. It looked almost like a child's bedroom. And there in the middle of the room was their very happy rooster, who they had been assured when they bought him, was a girl. They even had a potted lemon tree in the corner.
Spoiled chickens
I want to be their chicken
I bought the magazine last week--but I haven't read it yet......now where is it?
Your chickens took it and are plotting...
LOL
I saw that magazine at Tractor Supply... i might just have to go back & get it.
I so want a Tractor Supply
I`m still waiting on ours,I go by it all the time and everything has been at a stand still for months, hope they didn`t run out of money. The outside is done don`t know about the inside and the parking lot is not finished.Maybe waiting for spring
The closest TSC to me is somewhere in California, we do have a Coastal Ranch & Supply (I think that's the name).
2 Tractor Supplies are close to me :)))
They had three issues for sale at our Tractor Supply. might just have to buy all three. :) I've never seen the magazine before. it looked interesting.
Wondering where I can find it??
http://www.hobbyfarms.com/urban-farm/urban-farm.aspx
It looks like they've only had 2 editions so far.
Cool thanks, now just to find a store near that carries it.
I found it and also the first issue, which I didn't buy, at our Saturday year round farmers market. The market is sponsored by Denver Urban Homesteading. They even have large bags of organic chicken food. I couldn't find anything in the magazine that would allow you to get a subscription, tho. I guess it's still too new.
I looked too and couldn't find subscription info either. I am going to buy the current issue and see if I can find the first one.
Miss J if you can't find it hollar & I'll mail it too you with a can of Milnot for you to try a couple of those recipes with.
The only way I could buy the first issue was as a digital download. I did buy it & have the 2nd print issue on the way. Now I need to get ink for the printer.....lol.
How funny! Thats not too far from me, I love my chickens but they are messy house guests! I would never get that by my DH, he gets upset when they poo on the porch.
I don't get the Urban one because I am not urban .. lol
But I will look for it here to see if there are any copies left of the first 2 issues for someone who might want them. And I will read them also to see what is going on with farming in urbania :)
I'm not sure I would like to have chickens in the house.....hmmmm. I don't really think my chickens would be that happy either. They really like to scratch and root around in their run. To each his own, though.
I've seen that issue at the local TS but didn't get it as I, also, am not urban. I don't think I was really urban even when I was urban =D!
PS. We have lots of TS's down here in Texas, but I really do miss the Farm and Fleets up in IL--one of the few things I miss from the "urban".
I agree, chickens really do like to be outside. They like sunshine, and dirt, and bugs, and stuff like that. I think these people were really afraid of predators. They do take them outside for "supervised" play dates. I really understand how they don't want something to get them, so I guess they are happy chickens. We have foxes, and I worry about that. I haven't seen any in our yard, tho. Maybe our coyote chasing dog keeps them out.
My chickens love to free range so much I wouldn't put them in the house even if I wanted to. But I would LOVE to leave that article laying around just to make my husband nervous! LOL
I went to hastings (Book store) here and they looked at me like I had lost my mind... They carry every magizine under the sun cept this one. I am awaiting a call to see if they can not order me a copy...
Thanks Grey I will let you know. BTW I have lost 15 pds in 3 short weeks.. WHOOO HOOOOo I can fit into my fav jeans...
Ok now back to the thread
Congrats! Miss Jestr... I am only at my measly little 8 lbs. being out of town its very hard to find food to eat other than fast food that's affordable. Went back on yesterday. Hopefully this next two weeks goes well.
hopefully Tractor supply still has issues.. i didn't make it there tonight. One of the kids packed a bag & climbed into my car... I kinda got side tracked trying to rework my dinner menu to be edible for an 8 yo.
Speaking of spoiled hens...

Tractor Supply was out.. but it turns out my friend works the magazine area (and is a manager) at Books a million... They carried it before Christmas. He told me to check back Friday afternoon. He thinks there is a box of them in this truck load he got to day. :)
tractor supply was very unhelpful. The boys working the counter just looked at me like i'd lost my mind. I asked when they restocked magazines... "once a month" I asked when that day was... their response.. "i don't know.. once a month".....
headed to KC tomorrow.. if i have time i'll check the feed stores at Butler & Harrisonville for it. Now that I can't find it I really really want it.
I'm pretty sure I picked mine up at Borders Books in Elk Grove.
