Mahonia eurybracteata

Portland, OR

Has anyone any experience with Mahonia eurybracteata? I got my first last spring and it was wonderful in a pot, in which, unfortunately, I left it for the winter. With our cold snap in December the leaves all turned brown (not the nice bronze of the new growth), then blackened and eventually all fell off.
Last weekend I put it in the ground with great hope but am wondering if the leaves falling off spell doom for the plant.

It's such a wonderful plant I would be very unhappy to see it not be hardy enough for our so infrequent cold weather.

I had to go and Google. I thought you might have something cool I had to have. I have that one. I bought 3 last fall. It is Mahonia soft caress. Absolutely cool. I will e-mail a lady who planted some outside in the garden and ask how hers are. I put mine in the greenhouse which is unheated. I did loose a couple of leaves but not bad. Things in pots or containers can struggle through a winter. Usually anything I buy in the fall that I might question I try to protect and keep dry. It is great but not great if it won't live through a winter. They were a little pricey too.I wanted to order some for the nursery this year. Check the roots to see if they look good. They should probably be a yellow color or fat white.

The roots looked fairly strong when I put it into the ground so that did hearten me somewhat. I don't know why I didn't protect them(actually I also bought one as a Christmas gift for my sister and it looks the same) except that I have become more unwilling to baby things.

As much as I love them, if they won't take the weather....

Do you have a mahonia gracillipes as well? Much different but beautiful right now. I have had that in the ground for two years and it is doing great.
