Dave has hooked another one.

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

I have listed my peacocks for free here on Dave's several times and have given several away to DG members.
I got a D-mail from some rwm_2004 asking if I still had the peafowl to give away. I said yes and because I had never seen rwm_2004 I checked out his status. He had only joined the day before the D-mail. When talking with him, he said he was looking for some Call ducks on line and decided to search free Call ducks and got no hits. But he did get a hit for free peacock. Problem was he could not get to the forums to check it out unless he was a paid member, so he joined. He thought it was worth the money if he could get the peacocks for free. When he came over we talked a bit and he told me the story and added that he had checked out the forums and said MAN there is a lot of good information on here. He is a young single man who is into bird hunting and we put the peafowl in his bird dog carriers. He said he is not a gardener but who knows, if he stays a member for all the great information on other subjects he may just come to love the whole package. Dave's really is a great place.

LOL, what's he gonna call with a peafowl? That reminds me of a great joke. I'll have to go post it on the "Jokes" forum.

More peafowl. In the jungle peafowl can hear each other for 20 miles.

What type do you have 1lisac?

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

There are different types? I have Petey I would say he is about 4yrs old because this is the first year his tail feathers are fully developed. He hangs with the guinea birds. He just showed up 2 years ago this coming June. Everybody said he wouldn't stay but I have never had anything leave here. He eats from one of the cat bowls (he must have known I was talking about him because he just showed up) among other places. In the spring 4 others show up, male and female, and they get in the back of my truck because there is loose feed back there.
There is blood and scratches all over my sliding glass door, because he sees himself in the mirror and gets in a fight. When he runs across the roof it sounds like a stampede. I guess you can tell I have grown really attached to him, he has a ton of personality and is beautiful.

Be careful not to make too much of a pet out of the cocks. I have known plenty of people who work with the birds when they are young so they will eat out of their hands. Then when they get to be two or three they get mean. They see you as a threat and try to dominate you. Feed them on the ground or out of boles but don't teach them to eat out of your hand. If you have pictures I can tell you their type and color.

No, I don't make pets out of an animal that would be wild. We keep our distance but I never thought of feeding him from my hand. I just watch him poop all over my deck. He is so interesting to watch. Heres a picture, I hope.

He is beautiful. Just wish he wouldn't roost on my deck. My front door is just to the left in this picture. He just sits there.

They make a product called bird spikes to keep pigeons away from some areas. Maybe a row of that on the railing for awhile until he got the message would work. Just a thought. It looks like this: http://www.squirrelstop.co.uk/bird_spikes.asp

1lisac, what you have here is what is called ( Pavo crisiatus ) a Wild Type India Blue, meaning, that it is an India Blue species and color. The India Blue comes in six colors other than the Blue Wild Type, White, Cameo, Purple, Bronze, Opal, Charcoal and Midnight. They also come in four other color patterns, Black Shoulder,Pied, White Eyed and Silver Pied. Birds can be one color and be split to another. They can also have several color patterns. You can breed a Purple, Black Shouldered, White Eyed, Pied. Then you can cross the India Blue to the Green and Hybs, called Spaldings. So then you can have a Purple, Black Shouldered, White Eyed, Pied, Spalding Hyb..

The India Blue only has one species but the Green has three subspecies, Pavo Muticus muticus
( Javanese ), Pavo Muticus spicifer ( Burmese ) and Pavo Muticus imperator (Indo-Chinese ). The bird I have at the top of this thread is a Java Green Pavo Muticus muticus. All three subspecies of the Green are on the endangered species list and it is hard to find pure stock.

The rarest of all is the Congo peafowl; Afropavo congensis. This is one of the rarest birds in the world. I have never seen one in person but I have a friend who once in charge of all Congoes in the US. Price was 20,000. each ( not sure now ) and money alone would not get you a bird, you must be approved by a board first.

Here is a picture of an Afropava congensis, I think this bird was at the Bronx Zoo.

Wow, I had no idea there were so many types. Thanks for the info. I'm not breeding him to anything. When his "friends" come around I will try to get pictures of them, there is a white one in the bunch.

I used to be a counselor at a Girl Scout camp outside of San Antonio. The person who owned the property behind the camp's property had peacocks. We could hear them ALL THE TIME! I can't tell you how many little girls I had to calm down and try to convince that no one was in trouble when they heard the birds calling, "Helpppppppppppppppppppp!" LOL They would occasionally come to visit and they were beautiful.

I used to have a pair of blues here in the city. We have a decent sized yard and they lived here with no problems for a year or two. Then Rocko, the male, started challenging small compact cars. Either that or he want to make love to them. We gave them to a farm outside town after that. Very sad for us.
