Pansies - 8b

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Just did a big bed of pansies last week. Forecast for freeze tomorrow night. Should I cover them?
I also did bluebonnets in another place.....will they be okay w/o cover? Thanks so much for the help I receive from everyone on DG!!!

Bluebonnets will be okay. Mine came through without any problem after the freezes earlier in Jan. Since your pansies are probably still very small I don't think it would hurt to just through a frost cover over them for a night. But I'd take it off each morning. I had some pansies already planted in the fall and they came through the hard freeze well even without cover, though they are in a very protected area.

Thank you much.......it's raining here this morning......when it stops I'll cover per your suggestions. Yes they are still small; the bed is fairly large, lots of work. Tnx!!!

during the freeze here I never covered my pansies and they are fine.. I have them in window boxes, pots and out in the front yard.. It got down below freezing for several nights

Oh my, thank you soooooooo. After talking to neighbors they also never cover their pansies....so, I changed and did nothing. Will let you know the outcome on Monday when it warms up a bit. Rebecca

Pansies should be planted up here by Oct. so by this time they are hitting their stride. They are the most frost hardy flower you can grow and the deer just love them.

If you like pansies, also think about viola, (johnny jump ups). They can last a little longer in the heat and reseed if you let them.

I love Johnny Jump Ups, grew them in MI. They came back every year and did well into mid summer. What time of year do you sow them here?

Good idea, bananna. Is it too late to put some viola plants out now? Well, I mean when it warms up a bit, haha. Right now its 34 degrees. I'm staying in where its warm.
