I;m interested in getting started again raising rabbits. Any one interested in continuing a thread on rabbit production for meat. Thanks

Lodi, United States

Hi MrRich--I think we may have scared away the meat rabbit raisers....what with our cute fluffy, bunnie wabbits (and I do have one--Bugsy).

But it is certainly a valid topic and I would be interested in learning how it is done. Would you be raising them to sell or for your own use?

I do remember there were some rabbit farmers in our midst. Perhaps they aren't gone, merely lurking, and will chime in.

French Lops are also good meat rabbits.

Id never heard of eating bunnies until we moved here to Louisiana. There are many people that raise them for meat in my area and a pretty reputable breeder down the road from me too although I never can remember her name lol! The kids use them as their 4-H projects too... I guess they make pretty good money at the fairs if they win.
I'll definitely eat them if they are cooked for me but Ill leave the raising to someone else ;)

Thanks for the responses. Years ago, over 30, I use to raise a lot of New Zeland Ratbbits. I was federally inspected and sold many to a lab in PA, they used them for lab research. They paid real good. The only problem was having exactly what they wanted as far as weight and gender was concerned and you didn't have a lot of time to get what they needed. So you always had rabbits on hand that you usually wouldn't keep, like senior bucks. They would even buy day old kits.
Anyway, I now live in a small Ohio rural town and have a nice building and want to get back into raising some rabbits for meat and fertlizer. Just wanted to talk with some others as to what they might be doing and see if I can get some good breeding stock to start over. I had real good success with NZ Whites, but of course for meat other bre
eds are just as good if not better.

Bad news one of my lops had her babies on the wire a day before I was supposed to put the nest box in and I lost nine babies.Good news Lucy had eight babies this morning in her nest box right on time.

How sad to lose a litter!

Mount Pleasant, OH

So sorry about your loss. In years past I had a lot of that. Then I started to put the nest boxes in a few days eairlier and made sure they were cleaned out each day as the mother would use it as a toilet before kindling. I even had mothers kindle on the wire even when the nest box was in place on time. Oh well, happy that you had another litter to take it place. Have a sunny day. Mr. Rich
