Was pleased to see a hummingbird nest in a small ficus tree, but really surprised to see the first baby hatched today! Seems kinda early. Hope they make it through the winter rains.
Hummingbird hatched today
Amazing picture! How big is the nest?
About 1 1/2" round. The eggs are like little jelly beans. Had a nest last year in the same tree and watched the birds develop all the way to maturity. They hung around in a nearby hibiscus for feedings, then they were on their own. I will post updates. The nest is actually about 3' height. I have to look down to see it. Well protected tho and I won't disturb the mom too much.
Lucky you. I'd love to watch (and photograph) all that.
Dave
That's great steve! be sure to keep us posted!
Gosh, I'd just love to find a nest like this one. Hope you'll keep sharing your photos on this family. This is exciting.
oooooooo! How exciting.
Not that I wanna wish my life away, but that picture makes me wish for May, when the hummers start showing up around here. Too bad we have to first get thru the rest of winter, & the snow that's coming this weekend!
I hear ya! If I could afford it, I think I'd move to San Diego in a heartbeat.
Steve, Lucky you to see the nest and be able to photograph. I have lots of hummingbirds when summer arrives. I counted the ones I could see at one time around my house, 6 feeders and lots of flowers. I counted 45, according to what I read, one should multiply that number by 5 for hummers in the area. But I have never found a nest here in the 15 years I have lived here. At my other place found several nests and made pictures of hatchlings. Don't know why I can't find any here,
Good luck to you and the hummer family, keep posting photos.
thanks, Donna
WOW! 45 , your yard must really be humming!
Ahhhhh, so cute!! How tall is your Ficus tree? I expected any nest to be in a taller tree.
That's adorable!
I know. It was so cute. He was kind of wriggling his head to get it off. It was like a little football helmet. I wanted to lift it off, but didn't dare touch. The mom was hovering right above my head. Just a quick photo and left her alone.
ducbuclin, the tree is about 8' tall. This is the 5th nest in that tree. Might be the same mom, who knows. They live 12 yrs. Did anybody see the PBS Nature broadcast of hummingbirds on Jan. 17? It was awesome.
Where the heck is Kelseyville?
So sweet!
Steve, Kelseyville is north of San Francisco. Ever hear of Clear Lake?
I can't believe you've had so many nests! I feed at least 25-30 hummers-4 remained through winter this year and still no nest.
Cute photos, they sure look sweet in that warm bed.
Neat! My Missouri hummers liked to nest in the oak trees 15' or so up in the air. I could only watch the parent come and go...
I love that one of the babies waiting for lunch. Great capture. Do you think mom is an Anna's? You have the Costa's there too which I've never seen but I think they're similar. She sure is pretty.
Great shots Steve!! Babes are so sweet and the Mom is beautiful!
Great shots of the nest and babies, also mom.
I have Rufous, Calliope and Black-chinned at my feeders in the summertime but have never been able to find a nest.
yeah. They're the Anna's. Have a feeder near the kitchen window and they are on it constantly. Interestingly, while a female is nesting and raising young, she is able to get on the feeder and will be aggressive just like males. Otherwise, you hardly ever see a female getting a chance on a feeder.
awwww
Now that really helped my winter blues....Thanks for sharing!! ^_^
Yes, but doesn't it make you want to get on a plane to San Diego?
Well yeah.....but I would go any where that is warm and sunny right now!
Steve great pictures of the babies. So glad you are able to take pictures of them and forward so we can all enjoy the little beauties.
Donna
How exciting and wonderful!
