How long does it take a chicken to lay an egg?

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

It seems to take mine forever! I feel like maybe I should put some reading material in the nest boxes. I need to do some cleaning in there and I have one that decided to come up and take her time about getting the job done.

Hey Gwen: Whats the hurry. Thats like telling a woman she can only have a five minute bath. There are many reasons for bathing, soothing, cleaning, reading, curing aches and pains, thinking, and the list goes on. Like a good glass of wine...LOL Just be nice to your fine feathered friends and remember enjoy them. Happy hens lay better. Howie.

It takes a while, we have some that sit and sit and sit till they finally pop the egg out. So, not to worry, it's not easy squeezing that egg out.

I've got some that sneeze & the egg pops out.. and another one that turns circles in the nest, pants, huffs & puffs, moans a bit and 20 minutes later you get an beautiful egg. Makes me wanna cry watching her lay it.

Gwenalou,
A hen starts laying about 5 or 6 mos. They lay about 5 to 7 eggs a week as it takes about 26 hrs. to form an egg. It takes about 3 weeks for a fertile egg to hatch.

Hi, 7Chickenranch, welcome to the forum!

to funny greykyttyn, I can just see that hen doing all that.
Some do seem to have more of a struggle popping that egg out, and some have none. Sort of like women having kids, some seem to pop them out with little problem and some have a horrible time (I would be in the last one there). At least we don't do it almost everyday like a chicken :)

ya.. i've got no kids yet and she makes me seriously rethink my decision to want kids when i watch her. The poor girl has to sit for a while afterwords & just be quiet.
