What are your favorite tropical vines?

West Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

Hi Everyone,

I love tropical gardening. I really just started last year. I am in Southern California and I have many bananas, gingers, elephant ears, cannas, palms, New Guinea impatiens and orange and yellow cape honeysuckles. I am looking to plant 7-8 different vines around the backyard in different locations. Some will just get morning sun, some a little more than that and some will get some brutal afternoon sun so I'm looking for vines that are tropical looking big leafs or tropical looking flowers and also fragrant for at least a few. I have a corkscrew vine and a costa rican butterfly vine both I love. I also have 2 bougainvillea that do well here. I ordered a stictocardia vine and I believe I would like a Rangoon creeper. My husband and I have planted all of this ourselves and we have really fallen in love with tropical gardening. Thanks.

There are so many to choose from, but some of my favorites are:
Thunbergia mysorensis
Strongylodon macrobotrys
Cissus discolor
Passiflora quadrangularis
Petrea volubilis
Mandevilla spendens
Stephanotis floribunda

Siyos macrophyllus is a favorite, but it is a subalpine vine which does not grow in gardens.

Banisteriopsis caapi is a beautiful vine, but once placed in a garden must be fervently controlled as it is very invasive.

Watch that Stictocardia - if you turn your back on it it will take over the world.
I would definitely consider a Queen's Wreath (Petrea).

My favorite is the frangipani vine. I love the fragrant flowers and some of it's leaves are larger than my hand!
